Do a little digging,they were shipped with soft ,non hardened bolt and it wore off the lugs after a few hundred rounds and causing a lockup failure.

Not necessarily and yes, I get your sarcasm.

My father and a friend of the family each have one and never had a single issue. Mine, however, is sitting in the safe and hasn’t been fired in over 30 years. While I never had an Out of Battery issue, I did have numerous failures to extract and you couldn’t pattern this damn thing to save your life with any ammo, including the exact same handloads the two rifles I mentioned previously fed and patterned just fine.

I’m glad you got a good one and I remember being excited when I got mine but due to my experiences with my personal 742, it’ll only come out of the safe for use when and if all other options have been spent.

Many years ago the Remington rep described the Remington 742 to my gunsmith as "A gun that commences to self destruct with the firing of its very first round".

I always got a kick out of that. Over the years I have enjoyed buying guns just to learn about them. I bought a 7400, learned the gun, accurized it {as far as that would go} and as soon as I could upon learning everything I could about the system, sold it. I have no interest in ever touching another, tho I am aware of the gazillions of guys that use them every year to fill their freezers. To each their own.

I also had a 742 in 30.06, serial# A532665 to be precise.
Fortunately, I never experienced any catastrophic failures.
The bolt lugs were, however, doing a very efficient job of chewing up the receiver rails at the end of the bolts rearward travel.
This was readily appearant when the rifle was completely disassembled (i.e. bolt was removed).
After a bit of research, I found this was one of the common problems with these rifles and could progress to keeping the bolt stuck in the rearward position although mine had not yet gotten that bad.
Sold it with full disclosure at a show (for a parts gun price) to a guy who wanted it primarily because it was made in Ilion, NY, and he grew up there.

I believe the guitarist of Aerosmith has Elvis snub nose 38 that he had to leave on an airplane when he landed in some city.

It never ceases to amaze me how loyal and dedicated people are to their brand. Often undeserved loyalty. I think part of it is the inability to accept their favorite brand as being less than good. Maybe not all products from that brand, but often some or many models. The same thing goes for Chevy or Ferd. I've even had people I know stand up for their Vega and Pintos.

We poke fun at the ring of fire objects. Ever wonder why they've earned it? My first real gun that I earned the money for was Remy. I liked it, but couldn't hit squat with it. And because I was a Remington man (boy really), I bought a rifle by that maker. Used, but glitzy. I should have remembered the model, but it was a 721 or 722. Not important because I'll never own another. Just for the record, those were 1960s vintage. I accept the idea the used one may have had a problem and that's why it was for sale. Doesn't matter, the well is poisoned.

the only Remington shotguns I have are clones of the ones I used at work. I have an 870 police, and an 1187 police. The 1187 won't cycle anything less than about 1200 fps.
