Heard back from HK USA that their manual truly does recommend using the bolt carrier group to remove the handguard crossbolt on the HK416 by inserting one of the bolt lugs into the crossbolt. They also said a large phillips head screwdriver "should" work.
It just seems wrong to use the bolt lug, save for a true, "field strip" sans tools, so I'm hoping someone here might have a better idea. I'm THINKING a #4 Phillips may work (my #3 isn't close, and I can't find a #4 anywhere in town), but figured I'd ask here in case someone has gone this way before.
And yes, I've Google'd, and there isn't much out there other than what looks like a possible tool found on some Japanese website, and people who have used the bolt lugs as recommended. I've found some #4 phillips drivers online, so I may have to go that route if nothing better presents itself.
Thanks in advance.
