I bought a 9mm in December of '08. After actively searching and only paying normal prices I have just now reached the 1000 round mark. I'm not saving up for the end of the world or the inevitable zombie invasion, just enough to feel ok about going to the range and losing 100 or so rounds. I know this is puny compared to some of your stashes. Venders aside, how much do you have piled away just for your own shooting pleasure?

I don't feel right if I don't have 1,000 rounds minimum of every caliber, except .44mag which I only have 2 or 3 hundred. 9mm I have the most of - about 2,500 rounds.

I try to keep a 6 months supply on hand. That way when shortages happen I have enough to get through them. It isn't often that shortages last much longer then this. If my supply gets lower it is time to reduce shooting for a while.

I've given this some thought. I can't count on vendors to have 9mm and .45 in stock... so I need more than my old stockpile (which was a couple of boxes -- roughly, one trip to the range).

So I'm shooting to keep a balance of 600 in my two major calibers -- which is probably about 6 months worth for me. Under current conditions, if I found Blazer Brass or WWB at Wal-Mart, I'd probably run the stockpiles up to 1000 in each caliber.

In my other calibers, .32 H&R Mag, .38, and .357 Mag, which I shoot only once in a while, about 200 would be a good stockpile. In .327 Fed, for which I can sub .32 H&R, maybe 40 rounds. I am currently short of .38 and .357 by these standards.

Good Lord, you guys are history if/when a Zombie Legion or two attacks your houses.

I don't have an exact count, but the numbers are something like this:

.45 ACP FMJ ball - 10,000 rounds
9mm FMJ ball - 5,000 rounds
.357 mag - JHP - 1,500 rounds
.380 ball/jhp - 2,000 rounds
.38 ball - 500 rounds
.44 mag - 500 rounds
.32 cal - 200 rounds
.22 cal - 500 rounds
5.56 mm - 5,000 rounds
.223 cal - 1,000 rounds

Not to mention the 3,000 rounds in transit from Natchez.

I know I'm forgetting some....

I don't have an exact count either, so some of these are approximate.

9mm - 6000 rounds (have another 1K backordered)
.22lr - 4000 rounds
.223/5.56 - 2500 rounds
.357 SIG - 3500 rounds
.45 ACP - 550 rounds
.40 S&W - 200 rounds

I also have a few hundred rounds of 5.45, though I don't own anything in that caliber. Bought it anticipating an AK74 purchase that never happened.

No kidding! My puny 1000 9mm and a handfull of assorted shotgun sheels and 22lr doest seem to compare. Now I know who to blame for the shortage! Wink Seriously though, I think I'll keep my ammo as stock and if I want to go shooting I'll have to pick up more. Btw, I did pick up 2 more mags for my P225. So all this ammo will be ready if needed.

Buying by the case (1K) is the only way to go. Except for some minor Wally World fill in quantities ~ it is the only way I buy. Have over +25K rounds various (no 22). Been buying that way for years. YMMV

I haven't been able to hoard any at all. The last 9mm I bought was some Federal 9mm HST +P, 50 rounds of that to replenish my dwindling defensive reserve. Haven't bought practice ammo in 8 months - all handloads.

Right now, I've got:

9mm WWB - 100
9mm Remington GS - 7 (carrying 46 in 3 mags)
9mm handloads - 100 rounds FMJ, 50 rounds JHP (going to make more FMJ later)

7.62x39 - 30 rounds Wolf, 20 rounds Fiocchi; 200 rounds of Brown Bear on order
.308 - 7 rounds of various types for my deer rifle (don't use it much)
20Ga - 80-100 shells, sport loads - Remington semi-auto

So, in total, 303 pistol rounds, 57 rifle rounds, and 80 or so shotgun shells.

5.56 and .223 are the same size, but the chamber pressure on a 5.56 is higher than the .223. A firearm chambered for 5.56 can shoot .223 fine, but one chambered for .223 cannot safely fire a 5.56.

My wife knows that if the house catches fire and I'm not home, she should tell the fireman: "Boys, you might want to let our ammo cook off before you go in there".

In reality, my ammo is stored in a small storage room serviced by a commerical grade sprinker system. I may end with with a lot of wet ammo, but it should not pose a fire hazard to anyone.
