CUTs are usually awarded for saying something funny or witty etc. Or you can get a "banned" CUT.

/Not a Mod nor do I play one on TV.

Not very funny.

Kz1000 is correct, in that Para and Lbj give CUTs at their discretion.

Folks have always _earned_ a CUT in some manor. There is no set formula, and not everyone gets one, and that's what makes CUTs unique.

I earned my original CUT for hosting a day of shooting with Lbj. He got a kick out of my Desert Eagle:

Folks with CUTs all have their individual story of how they got it.

In my case, one day I received an email from a certain moderator, saying I could have my choice of CUT. And after thinking about it, and how it would look in the format used here, I asked (politely) for, and was granted the one displayed. After all, I am a bit of a cross-eyed optimist. Wink

Or if Lbj is in town and you can meet up or coordinate a SigForum dinner or a local SigForum shoot he has been known to award a CUT. I met him and a few other members for dinner down in Dallas a while back, great times and good people.

Oh and flashguy has some big hand cannons and fast rides!

My original CUT was "Certified all positions." A lil welding double entendre.

under water is a type of welding, and a location more than a position. There are many, many welding certs.

"Certified all positions" is just the first line of many certs. Then the cert will detail the type of welding, and the material and application. It depends.

The "positions" part, isn't how you're standing, or where you are, but the position and direction of the weld.

For instance, for mine, you have to do a coupon of vertical up multiple pass, and overhead multiple pass. If you can do those, you get the vert down and flat positions by default.

You do it under direct supervision, and then cut and grind. If the coupons pass visually, then they are taken to a lab and either X-rayed or destructively tested.

Other certs are for instance, pressure vessel, and pipe welding, and underwater.

I know, I am a project manager for a company that does shutdowns. When guys tell my boss that they can weld anything, he always asks them if they are certifiedto weld anything underwater? Because he is certified to some odd feet down, i forget how far now.

Just bored so trolling the boards.
