I shot my first IDPA event this weekend. It is something I have wanted to do for a couple of years now. I'm glad I finally did it.

I went early and warmed up on some steel plates to try and steady the nerves. I told everyone that I was a 1st-timer. And, they had one of the regulars show me around and answer questions. Everyone was very helpful. I shot last in our squad of 11. So, I got to watch 10 people do each stage before I did it. Everyone said to take it slow. So, I did not push for speed. I had no idea how competitive I would be. But, I only had 3 penalty points total for the 5 stages. And, I was still mid-pack for speed. I can't wait to get some practice in and start trying for speed. Unfortanately my schedule and responsibilities severely limit how often I will be able to compete for the next year or two. But, I'm sure I will be back.

I did have one question. When I signed in, they were not sure what group a P226 9mm DA/SA should be in, SSP or ESP. I ended up shooting in ESP. For my first time out, it did not really matter what group I was in. But, for future reference, should it have been SSP?

Strange that whoever was doing signup did not know the Divisions. But yes, a P226 is a natural SSP.

You can shoot it in ESP if you like but there is no real reason for that unless you just want to get classified in another division without buying a new gun.

You have a great SSP gun there. I love my 226 (both of them) for IDPA. The ESP guys give me some fun pokes but thats ok, I'm getting better times than them now so they rib even more Big Grin

ALSO remember to Dry fire, you don't have to be shooting to get better scores. The speed will come but the dry fire will grow your accuracy the quickest.

Later and Enjoy it.

I'm not paranoid about safety, I'm passionate about it.

Thanks for the responses. Next time I will make sure I get in SSP. But, I don't want to sound like they did not know what they were doing. The guy signing me in thought it was an SSP, but was not sure. Someone else said it was an ESP, because it had a decocker. He was not confident either, but seemed more sure than the first guy. So, that's what they went with. I don't think there are many people shooting Sigs there. And, it did not matter much to me. I just wanted to try it out.

There is a practice session tonight. I normally can't make them due to my schedule. But, tonight looks like it will work out.
