Hey guys,

I am looking for a good, tactical based (ie not geared towards competition shooters but for rather law enforcement officers) pistol shooting class in the Illinois/Northern Indiana/Western Michigan area. I would like a class that focuses on shooting your pistol better so you hit what you are aiming at with increased speed and accuracy, not a class that focuses on learning how to clear a quintuple feed with your non-dominant foot while blind folded and being attacked by a swarm of angry bees as many of these “survival” classes seem to emphasize. Any suggestions?

Regards,

AmicusCuriae

Gunsite has classes in Lebanon IN. I'm not sure how far that is from you but it's less than 2 hours from me. I'm thinking about trying it out.

You might consider hosting a Grayguns, Inc. course in your area. We offer multi-day courses which can be tailored to the needs of those participating.

This is core to what we teach. Email me if you are interested and I can walk you through the process.

AmicusCuriae,
Tang is correct. Actually, go there first as it has all of the criteria which would need to be satisfied for GGI to come to your area.

GGI is in the works to come to Paducah, KY mid to late fall for a two day defensive based pistol class. The formals on the class should be posted by end of the week, to first of next.

Paducah is 22 miles from Cairo, IL.

Steve Fisher is a top notch trainer and his classes are a bargain. He's doing some classes in south west MI this year so it would be close.

Blackwater has a campus in IL. They are high on my list of places to go train but I'm headed to NC as IL concealed carry is impossible.
Massad Ayoob does quite a few classes in Milwaukee/N. Illinois area.

Check out:

Bob Houzenga is a great instructor and even better shooter.

I took their Advanced Handgun Skills class a couple years ago. You want to shoot faster and more accurately, that's your class. I ran my 229 .40 through about 1400 rounds during the two day class.

They'll go through the basics and then increase your speed and accuracy. You'll also be taught one handed shooting as well as shooting while laying down, on your side as well as upside down.

You'll also be taught how to draw quickly without sweeping your support hand. Learning how to draw made me realize that the guys I used to work with that carried guns for a living learned how to draw their guns from a fucking movie! I hate to curse but I just had to emphasize how ridiculous it was.

Midwest Training group is a good choice. Several years ago, I went up there with another operator to take a class from Ernie Langdon. Bob was a first rate host and a wealth of knowledge. Plus, you never know who will pop in up there. We were on the line shooting drills, and Ernie looked up and said "Hey Mas!". We turned around and Bob was standing there talking with Mas Ayoob. Bob often had the late Jim Cirello, Ernie, Bank Miller, Ken Hackathorn, and others.

Excellent Instruction; excellent facility; excellent pricing; and a curriculum that will enhance the performance of anyone.

This is the place to be: TDI

I didn't realize TDI is only five hours for me. I may have to put on it my list of things to do in '09. I'm already scheduled to go to Thunder Ranch.

Probably about the same distance for me. I haven't really gotten serius obout 2009. I've got a low light class and a carbine class scheduled between now and October. Both are singe day classes.

We should look into a SigForum Blackwater class. Their facility can't be beat and I'm sure we could get 15-20 people ot participate.

I'd prefer to go to NC instead. You are an LEO and LEOSA allows you to carry in IL. My CPL is worthless there. OTOH, I can drive to NC and never have to unload and lock up my pistol. I'm sure I'm not the only one in that dilemma. There are enough people in the Midwest who'd travel to NC

I'm doing the Pistol 150, and Carbine 123 at Gunsite's Indiana offsight (Lebanon IN)this year.
They are 125 miles from me. Easy 2 1/2 hour drive.

But I would love to do a Sigforum Blackwater shoot next year.
