P228 and P225 barrel differences
Hey all. I found something interesting recently. A friend gave me a spare barrel to have for my P228. It is a German-made, serial-ed and proofed barrel, one that was taken off of another gun for reasons unknown to me. I recently noticed that the barrel's serial number has an M prefix, which is different from the B on my P228. From the serial number thread on this forum, I noticed that all of the P225's (original German models) have the M prefix, so I concluded the barrel must be from one of those guns. It is also a KE or KF judging by the serial number. Not that it matters probably, but my P228 is a KA.

Anyway, the barrel is by no means new, but judging by the rifling and finish wear, it isn't very used either. I tried it in my P228, and lockup is excellent, just like my factory barrel. However, with the gun assembled, my recoil spring guide sticks out of the front of the slide. So I took it back out and upon comparing the barrels, I noticed the barrel lug on the P225 barrel is ever so slightly forward when compared to my factory original P228 barrel. Besides this, as well as some slightly different contouring on a couple of the non-contact surfaces of the lug, the barrels are identical. With either barrel, the slide racks perfectly. All is functional as far as I can tell.

Any ideas why the lug is offset? Do the P228 and P225 have this difference by design? I always assumed (never owned a P225) they'd be identical, and this big of a difference seems outside of manufacturing tolerances, especially when considering they each fit in the slide perfectly. I haven't tried test-firing it yet.

Any insight is appreciated Big Grin

The locking lugs are spaced differently. I’m surprised you can get the 228 slide onto the frame with the 225 barrel installed.

Look at this animation. You can see the unlocking/locking action and how important the position of the locking lug is to proper timing:

It is important to remember the P228 is not a double stacked P225, but rather a compact P226. While I've never personally compared them, I suspect the locking lugs on a P226 barrel vs. P228 barrel will be much more similar.

Also of note is member GerryR how owns and operated a renowned gun business ans is one of the premeir Sig action specialist used to convert a P226/9mm bbl for the P6/225 for an extended length bbl.
The P226 bbl was very close in size to the p6/225 bbl and had enough meat in the lug lockup area to aloow it to be machined down to the exact P6/225 dimensions.
Note also that gerryr at total automation was only doing work for his local viginia area customers. Per his coments here and his website info if still activly found.
