Stand Alone 320 FCUs from SIG, opens up customization

Great gesture, but I can't tell you how many times I've stopped in at the SIG store for a 10% sale, done some math and...realized it wasn't much of a break in terms of actual dollars spent.
I'm all for this, I'm all for working with other suppliers, but (IMHO) SIG has GOT to stop pricing their bits and pieces like we're all refugees from an HK Fanboy Camp.

I'd normally agree that 10% isn't much, but in this case when you're buying slides, grip shell, sights, barrels, magazines, and possibly a red dot, that 10% should be pretty huge. Their Pro-Cut slides are $399 with XRay3 night sights and internals while most third party offerings start at $400 for a completely stripped slide.

I think its brilliant! Probably the future of consumer goods - Tesla talked about opening up their drivetrains and software tech to other car makers.
Do something similar with watches.
Gives a certain amount of confidence in quality, to the consumer.

We have a reliable solution.

From and industrial standpoint, I have to wonder how hard it is to make a P320 compatible FCU. IIRC there are 80% FCU kits on the market. If there develops a decent sized third party ecosphere for P320 compatible parts, someone else may just end up craning out FCUs also. Does SIG have any patents that cover the FCU?

I'm with you on this point! Sig store is HIGH!

Patents won't last forever, and the FCU concept goes back to the P250 in 2007, although the P320 action is different and may have its own patents. The M17/M18 will have a life of 30+ years in the military, and like the 1911 and M4/M16 I am thinking it may become a "generic" spec that other manufacturers might produce. The M4/M16 TDP and 1911 drawings are in the public domain, so anyone can make receivers and parts, but I'm not exactly sure why Colt didn't retain the intellectual property.
That said, if Sig has an exclusive contract to supply the P320 that stipulates the design is their intellectual property and cannot be shared with other manufacturers than the above is less likely. But that wouldn't stop others from reverse engineering the design. Zev and Polymer 80 make 100% non-Glock "Glocks" just as Volquartsen, Tactical Solutions, and others make 100% non-Ruger 10/22's. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with the P320.

Bruce, will get in touch.

1911, Hi-Power and CZ75, anyone? I wish SIG all the best but yeah, if successful, it will be pirated. OTOH, I can't remember when I've seen an unlicensed copy of the Beretta 92 (Taurus, of course, got set up after cutting a deal with Beretta).

Does SIG in fact have any patents that apply to this. You seem to be assuming they do. I don't think this is the case. In point of fact, SIG got sued by Steyr about the P320 (Steyr lost.)
If there are no patents on this, anyone can make a P320 compatible FCU right now.

Yes, they appear to. Skimming through, several sound like the P320, but might also be P365. Links go to full text but not drawings. If anyone can pull the full patents with drawings we can know for sure.
