Anyone out there having problems with P320 full size mags spontaneously disassembling when being fired? Specifically, the base plate letting go and spewing the mag guts out while the mag body stays in the gun?

Let's wait to hear from someone that has some actual trigger time behind the P320, huh? Wink

What events preceded the spontaneous disassembly?

Was it disassembled for cleaning?

I have 4 mags for my full size 45. One of them is particularly hard to get the last round into. It'll go, but it takes some serious effort. The others seem to be OK.

Nope. Never experienced that, or even heard of it.

Is it a factory new magazine? Any chance it was disassembled and then reassembled improperly? Any chance a different baseplate could have gotten swapped in? (Such as a .45 baseplate on a 9mm body, though I'm not even sure if that will fit...)

Otherwise, it sounds like you may have a broken or out-of-spec baseplate and/or magazine body.

Never heard of it. I saw it happen to someone shooting a CZ in a match years ago and assumed it was because the magazine was taken apart and not reassembled correctly but I don't know that for sure.

Never ever.

Presuming the polymer base plate isn't broken and the mag body flanges aren't out of spec, I don't even see how it is possible.

When the stud is pushed in, the plate has to slide forwards to be removed. With the mag in the gun, the plate will not move forward. Unless the mags are longer than the grip frame module (e.g. FS mag in C grip frame).

Some additional info would be helpful.

I have not had this happen to me but if you do not reassemble them correctly this will happen.

When you put the base pad back on you need to make sure that the tab on the base pad retainer plate that is attached to the spring is put into the slot on the magazine or the issue you talk about can happen. If the base pad retainer is not in the slot it will keep the round tab on the bottom of it from locking in securely in the round hole on the base pad.

Check out this video for description. Even though Gerry is talking about the Springer Base Pads it still holds true for the standard Sig base pads.

I have at least 15 of the 320/250 magazines in various calibers and capacities.
Never a problem with any of them.

Just yesterday I had the problem that Jerry references in the video. I reassembled a mag after cleaning and neglected to properly seat the tab in the front edge of the mag body. I looked on the ground after doing some reloads and saw that the base pad had slid forward and was about a 1/16 of an inch from coming completely off.

My Sergeant from work dropped his from waist height onto concrete during a fight, no clue how, but it exploded into all its separate pieces. Went back together fine without issues but I've never seen that before this in a pistol.

Give Private Snuffy some range time after the P320 is issued and we will see a mag upgrade by SIG.

Over ten thousand rounds through one and six or so through another. never happened nor did any other shooters with the same platform. the magazine was not reassembled correctly as once the pin locks into place, it's not moving.

Check the floor plate insert to see if the pin is damaged or deformed. Check the hole in the magazine floor plate to see if it's clear of gunk and dirt. It should be almost flush when it's in place.

I've been shooting a P320F 9mm for IDPA / Action Pistol shoots for the past 3 years and haven't had any problems so far. I also practice with it in an indoor range (concrete floor) and do countless numbers of mag changes, letting the mags hit the floor and have never had a problem with the base plates coming off.

I drop mine and have no issues either and did so long before I had a 320 as I started with P250's that use the same mag, when but I suspect the ones that disintegrated did so because they were not assembled correctly {?}.

There is one magazine problem I would warn folks about. Do not use larger frame module mags in a gun set up with a smaller frame. Unless the mags have a proper spacer, as in seating the longer mag, they can over-insert and tie up the gun. I've done a mod to lessen the problem but nothing is foolproof except for a proper spacer/block that prevents the mags from over-seating.

The ridiculous rubber spacers are an abortion of the lowest order. SIG needs to make a proper spacer that snaps over the mag floorplate and positively grips the mag box so it can be used for reloads and also prevent the over-insertion.

A little background info might help. I was a fly on the wall during a conversation between two people. One was an LE type commenting that this happened to a Federal agency undergoing training. Mags were brand new and more than one experienced the issue. The second party commented that they had never heard of this or any other problems with the 320 mags. They speculated that this might have been restricted to a batch of new mags only. Just thought that with the collective experience and contacts here you might have heard about this. I don't want to be responsible for spreading unsubstantiated rumors, though.

Well there is no reason brand new mags couldn't have been assembled incorrectly at the factory. That is a possibility I suppose.
