So for 700.00 in 1995 roughly equates to 1,150.00 in 2018.

I bought a new P229 .357sig not long after they were available in the caliber. I remember paying $400 but I traded in a Sigma.

What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

In 1996 one of my SNCO's had an FFL and I asked him how much he could get me a P228 for. I fell in love with it when I saw it on the cover of Guns And Ammo in the late 80's. He said $565. Well at the time that was too much for me so I passed. Fast forward to 2003 and I finally bought a NIB P228 (when they were still catalogued) for $585 off of gunbroker.

I've been through a few P228's since then, most I paid much more for, but I still have that one. And I haven't even shot it yet lol.

I bought my P226 used in 1991 or 1992 for $550. Standard finish and standard sights. New ones were between $600 and $800 depending on options like night sights, K Cote, nickel etc.

I bought my 220 new in 94 w/ k Kote and factory night sights for $805 OTD. I kinda wanted the 228 for the same price but my dad steered me to the 45.

I Ended up with a 228 and 226 and 229 later all purchased used.

Stationed at Pope AFB next door to Fort Bragg in 1992, I had settled on buying a P228 to use for CCW whenever it might be legal for me to do so. Jim's Gun Jobbery, a pawn/gun store outside of Fort Bragg, had a great selection of NIB firearms, including Sig pistols. The P228 I wanted listed for $660. Then Bill Clinton and Congress proceeded to do the Assault Weapon/High Capacity Magazine Ban dance, which caused the P228's price to jump up to $850 and out of my reach. Gradually, however, the price drifted back down to $660. I bought a NIB WG P228 with 2 - 13 round magazines the month before Clinton signed that bill into law in 1994. With tax it was $700. Ten years later I got my first CCW license and started carrying that same P228.

I paid $325 OTD for a P220 in 1987 in Germany at a US Army Rod and Gun Club. The prices there were incredible. Remember on a military base back then you paid no tax and no import tariffs.

I just purchased a red cardboard box JK date coded P228 from a long time shooting buddy. He saved the original paperwork. And the receipt is dated January of 1990. For the bargain price of $595.00

An invoice (MSRP) from the mid 90's ran a few models back in the day:

  • P220 'American' in .45ACP at $750.
  • P220 'American' in .38 was $795.
  • P225 ran for $725.
  • P226 set you back $795.
  • The P210 was a cool $2,100.

European P220s were about fifty bucks less than the American version.
You'd have to add $45 for night sights & $90 for the K-Kote finish.

Guessing that adjusting for inflation would run these around the same prices as today's Legion Sigs. Comparing the two would be best left for another thread.

Waxing poetically doesn't help much. I was able to find a .38 and a 7.65mm P220 for just over $700 a few years ago. A 9mm P220 was had for $800. Found another at $450.

Lucky for us the modern X-Six is still cheaper than the P210 was then, even with the catastrophic dealer mark-ups.

Consider inflation. A P226 now is less expensive than it was 25 years ago. And, if I dare say so, the current crop of classic Sigs are better made too.

A place in Knoxville TN sold P229 for around $550 and a Beretta 96 for around $425 from what I recall. They had a low markup whatever the price was. I want to say $25 over cost.

UPDATE - Still $25 over wholesale and shipping!
