I am looking for some experience and/or advice on whether or not to trade in my Walther 9mm PPS on something smaller/lighter.

I have owned the PPS for almost a year now, and bought it as a 'nice to have gun'. I couldn't carry it before due to my previous agency's restrictions on off duty carry. I recently switched agencies, and was able to qualify and carry the PPS. The problem is, that I am also able to carry any .40 Glock for duty use (in addition to my now issued G22). Because of this I picked up a G27. While it is not as thin as the PPS, the PPS really doesn't do anything that the G27 can't do while having a higher capacity and more substantial caliber. I recently tried to relegate the PPS to back-up carry on the ankle, but for me it is a little uncomfortable i.e. heavy for this.

So, I am now thinking about trading it in for something lighter for the purpose of getting a dedicated back-up/ankle gun. I have never owned a revolver, and was thinking about a J-frame, although I have never been comfortable with .38 as a caliber and/or the handling/reloading characteristics of revolvers. I was also thinking of a P232, which would be larger than the PPS, but lighter. Smile It is nice to have the 9mm caliber in the small-ish PPS, as well as the capacity options (I have all three mags for it), but the weight versus the G27's doesn't make sense.

Somebody talk me into/out of something. Smile

If you're carrying a G-22 on duty, the mag interchangeabilty with the G-27 is a big plus. A negative is strapping the G-27 on your ankle.

I'm a reserve LEO issued the 229R/40. I've ankle carried the G-27, 642 snubby, and now it's the much lighter LCP. I can fit an spare LCP mag (or 642 speed strip) in my glove pouch.

Oh yeah, the PPS. I also have a 9mm, though I don't use it as an on-duty BUG. I would never suggest you get rid of a fine gun, but for me the lighter 642 or LCP have worked in ankle holsters. So did the the G-27, but I prefer something lighter.

Before you buy a snubby, check your agency's qual course. Ours is now the same as the duty gun (50 rds timed working back to 25 yds) and it's REAL hard with a revolver.

Sigmund:

I agree on the G27 on the ankle. I purchased a Galco Ankle glove and gave that a try, then used the same for the PPS as they are pretty close dimensionally. It is not so much the weight itself for either gun, but the way it balances the hoslter and creates some flop. Either pistol is O.K. standing/sitting/walking, but I do have to be concerned with possibly chasing someone down on foot day to day, so I guess I am looking for something that "disappears" better.

J frame, LCp, Kahr PM9. any of these would be good, they also give you the added ability to front pocket carry which is nice.

Use thumb-size bullets to create fist-size holes.
