Formal German reunification was on 3 October 1990. SIG Sauer commonly assembles guns with frames that were made and marked long before the shipment date. Many people have reported SIG date codes that were significantly later than the end of West Germany as a separate state.

West Germany refers to the west german states (similar to the states in America). The west german states had a standardized pistol, as did east Germany. Hence the "Made in West Germany".

Correct. I have heard of SIGs that were proofed as late as 1995 or 1996 that have West Germany on the slide. As German Reunification occurred in October 1990, I consider SIGs assembled after 1990 to be "German" SIGs and not "West German" SIGs. YMMV.

West Germany = The half of the german state that was occupied by the Allies after WW2. And later freed to govern themselves. Member of NATO
East Germany = The half of the german state that was occupied by the Soviet Union. Was only free after their occupiers political power collapsed. part of Warsaw Pact.
The 2 German States (as in separate countries NOT American States) remained separate until the fall of the Soviet Union(USSR) which ended the cold war. East Germany was a satellite state of the USSR and a member of the eastern bloc, this was not by choice, the USSR occupied and propped up the East German Govt. And Russia Is doing the same thing again today in the country of Georgia.
So West Germany refers to things manufactured in the "free" state of germany between the End of WW2 (1945) and the End of the USSR (1989 - 1990), there may have been a time in post WW2 germany where things were produced with a stamp other than west germany but i am to lazy to confirm that. all i know is that i have a couple items stamped with "made in occupied japan" so it might have happened.

You are correct sir. The FRG (Federal Republic of Germany (AKA West Germany)) versus the DDR (Deutsche Democratic Republic (East Germany)).
