I recently bought a Bulgarian Makarov.
I started to look on the Internet for information, and I see replacement barrels, custom stocks, people refinishing them, changing sights etc.
What is it about this little service pistol that generates enough "fan following" to make it economical for companies to produce all the aftermarket parts and accessories I see?
Am I missing something about this pistol?

Over the years there has been a large number of West East German and Bulgarian Makarovs imported. The demand for accessories was very high during this period. However, they have dried up, at least as far as importation.

They are fun to shoot. Extremely reliable a la' AK. Inexpensive, built like a tank and easy to maintain.

And if you manage to handle it well, it's extremely, I mean extremely, accurate.

When it came time to choose pistols for my kids, I had no doubts. An East German for my son and a Bulgarian mil for my daughter.

As it turned out, now my son "has" a P250 and my daughter is still not interested in shooting anything. So I carry the Bulgie and the EG is on loan to a friend.

Btw, AZ, .380 or 9x18M?

Guilty as sin.

My expereinces with a Bulgarian military and East German Mak was that they are very accurate and very reliable guns. Used ot be very inexpensive, too.

Accuracy, relability, afforability....isn't that what we ALL want in a pistol? Knowing that...the idea of why there are accessories around starts to make sense...doesn't it?

Don't forget the Soviet Bloc connection for us, um...shit, old farts. For decades it was the military gun of the other side, and what the KGB carried, and you couldn't get one. What Jehzsa said is dead on, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if they've built a minor cult following on their own merits.

About 10 years ago or so, you could buy one in excellent condition (I'm talking Bulgarian) for around $130 with that, you'd get a holster, a couple of mags and a cleaning brush. They seem less common at the gun shows these days, and when you find them, they are in the $175 to $200 range. The CZ 82 is an updated Mak with better sights and larger capacity which can be had for around $200 (it's classed as a C&R-and for some reason, the Mak is NOT). So...with the higher prices for the Mak, you might keep your eye out for a CZ 82....
