They don't have to be pistols that you currently own. This is one of those "What if?" threads.

P229 is the basic model for all the listed purposes. I appreciate one with a stainless steel frame for extended shooting sessions, and for concealed carry and police duty, the lighter alloy frame is a bit more comfortable. For HD, it really does not matter which P229, as it will be backing up a shotgun or rifle, unless there is simply no time to grab the bigger weapon.
If it is nighttime, and I do not grab a shoulder-fired weapon, then that means the P229R gets the nod for HD, as I can affix a Weaponlight. If I do grab a shoulder weapon, any P229 that I can drop into a pocket will work, but my SAS is a bit less likely to snag. If I am fully dressed when at home, then my usual duty/carry pistols will do the HD job, either the P229R or SAS. My all-stainless P229 pistols, with natural-colored stainless frames and two-tone slides with FCS, which SIG did give a special model designation, are identical except for serial number, so will function as one pistol for this subject. Such a P229 is great for extended range use and HD. So that is three models of the P229, but not fitting so neatly into the three roles in the original post. I noticed the OP did say I could have only three pistols for ALL purposes, just three pistols for the stated purposes. That means back-up, hunting, plinking, and other recreation can be other weapons, right? Edited to add: All of my P229s are chambered for .40 S&W at this time. Just as well, at the police range 9mm is priced the same as .40. When I retire, one "range gun" may get a 9mm conversion barrel, and a .22 LR conversion unit, to be purchased soon, can convert any of them to range guns. Have Colts, will travel |

Coincidently I do only own 3 pistols, and while they do interchange responsibilities it's usually like this.
HD: West German Sig 226 9mm CCW: Sig 250 9mm Range: Springfield Loaded 1911 .45acp |

Home defense: P229R - 9mm
Carry: P229 Gen2 SAS - 9mm Range: P229ST - .357 SIG w/ 9mm conversion barrel. I would also add a .22 conversion kit. This message has been edited. Last edited by: DCM7, Regards, Will M. Member: NRA (Life) - ORPA (Life) - GSSF (Life) - OFCC (Annual) - Buckeye Firearms Association (Annual)

I would have 2 P228s. One as a beater, one as eye candy for minimal use and back-up to the other P228.
The 3rd would be a high quality 1911. P229 SAS 9mm, P228 German 9mm |
