I have yet to find one that is completive with prices that I could find online. I am looking to buy a used sig p229 but have found gun shops used pistols to be of lower quality or overpriced by about 100-200.

You need to talk to a guy on here named horse. He can point you in the right direction.

you guys will not agree--but i prefer "Shoot Straight" in Tampa--large new store right across from Tampa Fairgrounds--nice new range--and the best selection--to me wide selection of good guns matters more than a few $$ in price--just disregard the attitude and keep smiling--YMMV

just my take--i would rather see and hold exactly what i want and what i am getting--even if it is $100-200 more--the price we pay for perfection/satisfaction--balance that off against the the $100 round trip FED-UPS cost to even try and get it right the 2nd time--not to mention the time and aggravation involved--I never get emotional or angry unless i get (well) paid up front for it--ignore the attitude you may find and keep smiling--remember mind over matter--you don't mind and he don't matter! again--good luck and have fun--YMMV

Shoot Straight is a good place to go browse and handle a LOT of different firearms. Once you decide what you like, pick out a local FFL with a respectable transfer fee (Shoot Straight is steep on their transfer fees) and order what you want from someplace and have it shipped in.

Try Deer Hunter guns in Clearwater. It is at 2797 Gulf To Bay (Hwy 60) and is a mile or so west of the Courtney Campbell causway.
They have a large selection, fair prices and really friendly helpful people... it is a real old fashion gun shop... you are welcome to sit down have coffee and chew the fat... Land-O-Lakes Gun and Pawn often has interesting guns in stock... and they are also friendly and helpful... They also will receive guns for a fair price. Shoot Straight does have a large selection... but they are not particularly friendly and a lot of their people are not knowledgeable at all... the word arrogant comes to mind when I think of them... I send a bunch of guns to that Shoot Straight place. I guess their transfers must be priced pretty fair... ?

NO! Not even close! Their market is mostly noobs who aren't experienced or know better (nice large presentable stores), so I'm shocked a customer of yours would fall into that category. I believe their rip-off FFL transfer is $50 plus the $5 call-in. IF you can find someone without an attitude for wanting a gun shipped in that they don't have. |

I check the gun I want at Shoot Straight, order it from Bud's, and have it shipped to Land-O-Lakes Gun & Pawn (they charge $25 for transfer including the call). One shop I found in Brandon had very fair prices. In fact, I traded a gun there, and bought my Glock 36 at the same time. I saved $150 over the final price that Shoot Straight gave me on that same deal. 2nd Amendment armory located in the breezeway of LaViva Plaza, at the N.W. corner of Kings Ave. & Lumsden Rd. His phone # is 813.210.4867 He has odd hours, so it's best to call ahead. |

Try Mike at Silver Dollar Firearms, 17202 Target Way, Odessa. He is located at the Silver Dollat Trap Club off Paterson Road. Stocks some Sig's, Glocks, and others. Good prices

If you are on the St. Pete side of the bay check out Kastle Keep firearms on Ulmerton. They always have a large selection of use stuff. Wain Roberts in Pinelles Park is who I use when I transfer something, $30 flat.

Damn! Wow- That's nuts! Most of the dealers on my FFL on file list are pretty cheap (from what I've been told). It's mostly members on here that use them, and they've all done their homework, and would only pay a fair price... or walk. Like what you said, about being shocked... so I don't know?? |

I went here and bought a sig 239 SAS.. The price was fair vs the internet. Prob paid the same or about 50 more than if I would have bought online. This is the way all gun shops should be. I know I can't expect to find internet prices at a store (My mom owned a store and had to compete with the internet) however prices should be competitive. Paying 150 over what I can get online is not acceptable |

I do a lot of window shopping at Shoot Straight, but their prices and the attitude of most of their sales staff ensure that I'll probably NEVER buy a gun there. The range is OK, but, seriously, it's an UN-AIR-CONDITIONED indoor range - it's usually hotter in there than it is outside!
2nd Amendment Arms in Brandon usually has a couple of things on the shelf, prices are OK at best, but they're reasonably easy to work with, and do transfers for a reasonable fee. Patriot Arms in Brandon prices their stuff about 10% higher than Shoot Straight (honestly don't know how any of these places stay in business), but they have an on-sight gunsmith who isn't a hack, and does fast work for OK prices. South Tampa Shooters on Dale Mabry has a SMALL stock, OK prices (not great, but OK), and Eric will stand by whatever he sells you. His transfer fees are reasonable, but he collects sales tax on transfers (based on the price you paid for the gun) Vic at Florida Ammo Traders is a great guy, very easy to work with, and does cheap transfers. Not much stock in store, though, and his hours can be a little wonky. For me, I've given up on finding a decent place locally anymore. I just find what I want on the internet, buy it, have it shipped to Vic, and deal with the transfer and waiting period BS. I'd be THRILLED to hear a different story from anyone else who's local to Tampa, and I've only been here about 18 months so I definitely don't know every place around... So if you're inclined to ever be in the Tallahassee area, that fella' (who is also posting in this thread), 220ST, is about as a good a guy to deal with that I've completed business. If I were in the area he'd be my choice. ========================================== Just my 2¢ ____________________________ Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right .... |

I just moved here a few months ago and have been fucked by gun shops before. Honestly I can say Kastle Keep is the best one I have been to. There prices are as good as you going to get at a store front. I paid 809 for the Sig p239 SAS. When online it looked like they go for about 750.00. After you pay the shipping and Fee's it brings you up to about 800. Then sales tax it brings you pretty close to what you would pay at Kastle keep. |

Can any of you Tampa area shooters recommend a outdoor range in the area? How about gun clubs?

There is a very nice outdoor range in Dade City (NE of Tampa about 30 min) located on HWY 50 just west of town.
Also, a mile or so east of the range on Hwy 50 is a pretty nice gun store... FWIW Chuck
