Most Frankensigs are generally done to just make the gun work or to cobble some parts together. Generally not very inspiring.

Gotta really hand it to you Para, this one certainly stands above the rest.

Even though I already know what you'll get back from Bruce, I'll be watching this thread for a report when it returns.

What a great project....

A member at the club I frequent has a 220 in 9mm. He claims it came straight from Germany configured in 9MM. Very rare, as I am told.

Actually, not rare at all. The 220 was first available as a 9mm, beginning in 1975. 38 Super and 45 ACP chamberings came afterwards. Lots of them around. One just has to look on the auction sites and haunt the classifieds here. They come up from time to time, sometimes in the form of the BDA.

I am very impressed, Para. I was wondering if you had a special project in mind when I saw your WTB ad for a locking block. Once you get the bugs worked out, that will be truly a one of a kind pistol.

BTW, don't ever sell that one. Big Grin

There is an issue with the conversion and maybe someone can add more on it. The issue is the P220-1 45 acp frame was reinforced at sometime in its production to help it better withstand the the forces on it from the 45acp round. My P220-1 9mm is a KH date code and has the reinforcements.

To do the conversion you will need the following parts.
45acp slide, 45acp barrel, 45acp locking insert, and 45acp slide catch lever.

The best way to get the parts and the most cost effective is to troll gunbroker for sellers selling P220-1 45acp parts sets.

I love seeing people making their own custom guns. There is nothing more satisfying than working with your own hands on your own machine.

Nice job Para!!

I love the unmarked slide. It'll look superb in black, too.

Congratulations.

So, I took the pistol back to the range today and had encouraging results. I replaced the recoil spring that came with the slide with a new 226 9mm recoil spring. I fired about 60 rounds of the same ammo as last time- Remington 115 grain fmj and Speer 124 grain +P Gold Dots.
I had only five failures to feed, which is much better than last time. Now that the pistol is sprung correctly, the remaining FTFs appear to be due to the feed ramp on the locking insert.

This is the last round out of a magazine, a Remington fmj. Jammed against the feed ramp, with the brass dented by the lower edge of the breach face.

Similar FTF with Gold Dot. Looks like this one would have made it with a polished barrel feed ramp.

Here's a failure to feed the first round of a mag into the chamber, from a locked back slide. Insert mag, press slide release, the slide moves forward a fraction, "tick", the round, a full metal jacket, hangs on the edge of the locking insert feed ramp. Eek Clearly a pistol that requires the services of a good gunsmithing shop, such as GGI.

Para, are you planning to do anymore work on it before you send it out to GGI?

No. Given that the fix for this is going to be modifying/polishing/whatever the feed ramp on the locking insert (and barrel), I'm going to leave it to the experts. Hollowpoints hanging on a feed ramp is one thing, but when a pistol does this with full metal jacket ammo, it needs a good gun doctor.

I am much pleased and encouraged by the improved feeding after changing the recoil spring, and once GGI is through with it, I'll have something reliable and truly special. Smile

para-
that locking block almost looks like it's been "nitroned"?? Is it a standard blued one like the ones you'd find in an older 220?

What you see is a heavy coating of powder residue. This locking insert is probably more than 20 years old.

This is going to be one awsome gun after its trip up to the guys/gals at GGI. I look forward to hearing more news on it. I love the way a full size heavy SS frame soaks up the recoil.
