That’s quite a video. Although a rule about looking down the barrel of a loaded gun is another we could add to the list ( Wink ), it didn’t appear that the guy caused the discharge himself. Any thoughts on what happened? Hangfire?

Yeah, I think hangfire, tho it was a LONG hang.

I don't know the details, cuz, honest and truly...it wasn't me! Big Grin

One of my safety lessons for my kids and others has always been "Look at your gun but don't let your gun look at you!".

Everybody says that this guy is an idiot, but how many guys have pulled a shotgun out of the back seat of a vehicle by the barrel while heading out pheasant hunting {etc}?

Some time ago {we believe due to the placement of evidence} a local fellow pulled a .410 off the rack of a 4-wheeler that was on the back of his pickup. He took one round into the upper chest and had the oxygen left in him to get into the pickup and attempt to start the rig.
That's where he died.

You LEO's can probably give other similar occasions.

That sort of kill-yourself hunting accident was commonly reported decades ago when I was a kid. I’m pretty certain those incidents were the main reason for laws, like Colorado’s, that prohibit transporting long guns in vehicles with rounds chambered. People who want their ARs or AKs loaded and ready to go get upset about them, but I believe that obeying such laws has saved many lives. That’s also one of the reasons why my long guns stored in safes don’t have rounds chambered. It’s often difficult to keep the muzzle pointed completely away from oneself when removing guns.

I timed that hangfire, and it was about four-five seconds. Much longer than the hangfires I’ve experienced, but well under the 30 seconds (IIRC) that the NRA recommends controlling the gun if a hangfire is suspected.

That's interesting all around.

I agree about the transport of weapons chamber-loaded.

Also interesting of the timing of the hangfire. I have never had a hangfire of that length and frankly, have only had a couple with smokeless loaded rounds over the years and they were click-bangs.
