Earlier this week I picked up a NIB S&W M&P full size 9mm.

It is the model with the magazine disconnect, review follows after this question:

Is there anyway to remove the magazine disconnect without voiding the warranty? Certifide S&W armorer? Sending it to S&W? Option just not available?

Review:
The look and feel of the gun is really great, but let's be honest that is personal opinion. So these next couple of comments are personal opinion; the first thing I like is that at initial inspection, the M&P looks aggressive. It has a light rail (as opposed to accessory rail because what else are you going put on it other than a light or laser light). The gun seems to have a slight forward slant, this again makes it look aggressive. The slide is slender and doesn't look like a block. (Yes a block, not a Glock, although I'm thinking of Glock, when I say block.... got it?) Side note: I do like Glock pistols, and currently own two.

The feel is nothing short of excellent!!! The ability to change the size of the grip by changing the backstraps is an option every gun manufacturer needs to include. The slide release is easy to access, but not so easy as to accidently release the slide at slide lock. Here is the feature I really like, the magazine release is interchangable from the left side to the right side. I switched it from the left to the right, this allows me to access the control without ANY grip change. (This is done by using the right hand middle finger) I (me, can't speak for anyone else) gain what I feel is significant time on my magazine exchanges because I don't have to shift my grip.

I would like to have forward slide serrations like my 1911 and my Sig 226 SCT. I like the look of the wavey rear slide serrations.

Range report:

My first box of ammo produced at seven yards a really tight two inch group about two inches right of the bull. My second and third box produced similar results, what the heck? I planned on drifting the sights but didn't have a tool available to me so went to a two day 'tactical' training course with the intend of having the instructor help me out. He shot the M&P and informed me it was me, not the gun.

Not long after I came to realize, he was correct. Not sure why I was shooting right, but problem fixed. Gun is dead accurate, with Sig Sauer and Glock type groupings at ten yards or less. (I don't shoot that well beyond ten so I can't speak to the accuracy of the M&P or any other at longer ranges)

THIS IS WORTH READING:
I ran about 1500 rounds through the M&P in three days, cleaned it twice and had ZERO, not one, malfunction!

The second important thing is this, 1500 rounds in three days and my hand feels no discomfort, no pain, no aches, no cuts, no bruises, nothing.

This really why I bought the M&P, I love my Glock 19, it's accurate, inexpensive, reliable, and simple. But for me, the thought of running 1500 rounds through her in three days scares the heck out of my hand.

The trigger is similar to that of the Glock, I think the Glock breaks a little cleaner; that's OK, I can deal with it, I'm not shooting a 1911. The trigger is the second reason I wanted the M&P, I'm really over the DA/SA deal. Again, my opinion.

The magazines are great, they have even number holes on the right side and odd number holes on the left side. Additional information is always helpful. They are expensive being $40 bucks each although you get a coupon for two extra mags until the end of 2008.

Break down and cleaning is slightly more than a Sig but less than a 1911.

So after the first 1500 rounds I will give the pistol 8.5 rounds out of ten. Subtract a little for the trigger not breaking as clean as the Glock, and a little more my version having the magazine disconnect.

Burwell's instructions are somewhat old. S&W now carries sear housing blocks without the ILS and Mag safety.

Factory part number for the replacement sear block is: 390900000

To replace, remove the takedown lever, drive out both frame roll pins, remove the locking block/front rails from the weapon, remove the trigger, trigger bar, etc from the gun, then lift out the sear block.

Put them back in reverse order with the new sear block in place of the original. After this, you will have no mag safety.

I have done this mod to several of our officer's weapons, takes about 2 minutes.

My experience with the M&P's has been similar.

It's a fine piece, and it's especially nice that an American firm makes it.

This makes me a serious hypocrite, since my daily carry is a P228.

I've fired a few M&P40s and have really liked them. Oddly though I prefer the heavy MA-spec 10lbs. trigger to the standard 6.5lbs. one. I don't know why, but I seem to shoot more accurately with the heavy trigger.

I'll eventually own one of these M&P Pistols. I'm waiting for Todd Green to finish up his T&E Torture test on his M&P. Smile

That will never be over lol. He's put more rounds through the M&P than anyone I've ever heard of...

I have the m&p 9c, it's been great. certainly not a sig but still great, I caught a show on tv where they put the m&P in a small cement mixer for five minutes, then another five min. with a shovel full of sand, then anoth 5 min. with a shovel full of 3/8 stone and finally another 5 with a shovel of 2" rock.... pulled it out and fired off the full clip. even the sights were still in tact. thats a good torture test

Handgun Vs. Cement mixer.

That's funny, also impressive.

Glad to know my new favorite gun took the test well.

I bought a fullsize M&P 9mm about a year ago...and sold it 3 months later. The gun felt good in the hand, pointed well, was reliable (as far as I could tell), and had the magazine capacity, but I could not STAND the trigger. Long, spongy, and heavy, and when it finally broke, the gun always 'jumped' in my hand.

I bought an M&P because it was made in USA, but all it did was make me realize how much I like my XD.

The magazine disconnect for any gun is the dumbest idea anyone has come up with. My CCW instructor brought up a good point...

If you are in the middle of a gunfight and you are doing a tactical reload and you drop the mag and you are behind cover well if a bad guy walks around the corner guess what you have at the moment a good throwing weapon. The bullet in the chamber is useless because of the great invention called the magazine disconnect.

I carry one every day ... actually sitting right next to me as I type. Love 'em.

Cheap, reliable, shoots great. The trigger is easily fixed.

I think I'll buy some more here in a bit - really like that Pro.

I just picked up the .40 and .45 compacts. What did you do to your triggers?
