Have been offered a 226 frame. The serial number starts with U 643, and from what I can tell dates it to around 2000. Does anyone know if this uses a stainless slide, or the folded steel? How can I tell if it’s capable of using only 9 mm, or 40/357?

No way to know for sure. But, if your frame from 2000 has the German definitive nitro proof mark, it probably had the folded slide, which means it was a 9mm gun.

And on your P226, if it has been proofed, it's right at the end of the frame's serial number.

Hoping for an education. What difference does it make that the top end may have been folded or milled. Aren't all the 226 lowers the same? No matter the slide type and even the caliber. I treat them that way, but that's certainly not a definitive try of the combinations.

That has always been my understanding- they are more or less identical to the point that the mag body for the .40 is dimensionally the same as the 9mm version (excepting the feed lips of course). It’s why the 226 .40 mag holds 12 rounds while the shorter, slightly fatter 229 mag holds the same number. My current duty pistol is a .40 frame with a milled 9mm upper. It also functions perfectly with a folded 9mm upper I own.

Thanks for all the information, and pictures. My frame does not have the proof mark. The main reason that I was wanting to know, was so that I could at some point by the proper slide to match the frame. But, if they are all the same, and they all interchange, then I guess it really doesn’t matter!
