I'd have to go with the 226 due to the all steel quality and DA/SA which is a good safety feature for HD. Either would be fine in terms of capacity, reliability and so forth but I'm just biased toward the Sigs.

9mm? Are you sure? Big Grin

(goes back to stirring said pot)

I own both and would prefer the G17 if I had to choose between the two. I like the shorter reset and consistent trigger.

Just went through this myself, but I compared the $500 Sig Pro to the $500 Glock 17/19.
I wouldn't compare a SigP226 since it is higher priced.

I went with the Sig Pro.

226! The Navy Seals, USSS, and other Federal agencies picked it for a reason.

My friends that don't own a Sig always like the overall feel of the 226 over my other Sigs. One of them that own many gun now wants a 226 after see mine.

I believe the USSS and many feds use the P229 not the P226. Wink

I chose the Glock 17, it is a little cheaper to buy and takes less maintenance, just my 2 cents!
But the Glock 17 9mm is hard to beat!

G17 with an X200. I like the trigger better.

i also chose the G17, but again second go with what you are good with....i alternate carry between a G17 and G19..so for me the choice is obvious...

i'd like to add one more thing, and that is to completely reject the idea that the DA provides additional "safety" becuase the extended pull allows you to "wake up more"...

the ONLY thing that creates safety in that instance is positive target identification and no sight picture and finger on the trigger until you are damn sure of your target...

i don't feel "safer" when someone erroneously points a gun at me because they have a long DA pull...

be sure of what you are shooting at....thinking the DA trigger will allow you to be less safe and grant you leeway in correcting your errors is a fantastic way to shoot a family member

Either one would make an excellent home defense pistol. Go with whichever you shoot the best and fits your budget. For me, I'd select the P226 because I'm not a big Glock fan (the slide cuts my beefy hands).

Six of one, Half Dozen the other...

Both are excellent guns.

Each are great guns... personally, I have found the Glock 19 a great gun with plenty of capacity, very accurate, and very reliable, but would have to say the same thing about my P226(.40).

My home defense gun is either my Ruger GP100 or my SIG P226(.40)... all depends on how I open the safe and reach in... one on the left and one on the right.

Current Collection: Glock G26, G19, G23C, SIG P226-40, and Ruger GP-100

For HD I would have to say the 226 for its slight edge in avoiding an AD while still groggy from waking up in the middle of a deep sleep.

I would actually disagree and discourage one from "switching them out" every so often.

I purposely sold or traded all my non-Sig pistols to consolidate all my options to a single style pistol that has the same function/operation no matter which one i pick up. Whether it be for home defense or concealed carry. I want to be assured that i am 100% proficient with my gun, and it's operations, so by carrying all Sig pistols, i am prepared for any issues/jams/malfunctions regardless of which one i grab, it's only the caliber and capacity that will differ.

Thanks

I voted for the Sig 226. Between the Glock 17 and Sig 226 I shoot the Sig much better and just prefer the way it feels in my hand.

Both are great guns so it will ultimately come down to what works best for the individual.

I didn't read people's comments so I'll respond to the OP. I bought my 226 for that specific purpose and I think it's perfectly good for HD but after handling and shooting my 229...I'm switching my HD to the .40 and using my 226 as my range pistol...I should say both guns will be range pistols but the 229 will defend my home. I owned three glocks and they were reliable and accurate guns. I've sold the model 21 45 ACP and have the two for sale on Consigment.

I've bought 7 Sig's since July and I have two P226's one a 9mm and the other a 40 SW/357 Sig. I like the feel of the gun much better and I shoot it them a lot better. That's is probably just me but I like the looks, and the feel of the grip area better and to me they are more accurate.
