Hello Everyone,

Of these two fine 9mm's, Which do you think makes the best choice for home defense only and why? Thanks!

Question:
Which of these 9mm's would you choose for home defense only?

Choices:
GLOCK 17
SIG P226R

I'd select the Sig . . . simply because I like the feel and weight of a Sig over the polymer Glock. That said, either would be a fine choice. Of course, I'd probably first reach for a Remington 870!

I am bias to the P226. I think for carry purposes the Glock variety maybe better suited...but for home defense and maybe the occasional play at the range, the P226 would be a lot more fun. You don't have to worry about weight, rusting, or anything like that in your situation.

Also, Sig has a deal going around. If you purchase a new classic pistol (P226 included) before Dec. 31st you get a sigtac flashlight, holster, mag carrier, and an extra mag for free.

The flashlight and extra mag would be nice bonuses for HD.

G17 in a finger safe ready to go, loaded with a high cap that has a +2 bumper, brimming with Cor-Bon. Attached to the rail a streamlight M6.

Arc.

As always, choose the one you shoot better with. I personally would take the SIG (preferred with a steel frame and a sure-fire mounted below it), ´cause i´m familiar with it.

Load it with Speer-Gold Dot +P or Federal Tactical HP Ammo.

In the end, you can´t go wrong with either gun/ammo combo.

P226R. Why? It follows that if I shoot a .40 P229R notably better than a .40 G22, I would shoot a 9mm P226R better than a 9mm G17.

I'm a Sig guy, But I think it would be hard to beat a 226R 9mm loaded with good Hollow Points. IMHO

I have a 226 and g19. the g19 is my go to HD gun with a TLR1 attached. So naturally I'd say g17.

You can't lose no matter which you choose. I prefer the Glock 17 because of the consistent trigger.

I have a p229R 9MM and a glock 19 right now. The G19 serves as the HD gun because I prefer it's consistent trigger and I have trained with it the most.

A home defense piece is likely going to get a lot of admin handling, so the long trigger on the P226R is a nice safety feature.

gruntjim you bring up a very important point. Also an added benefit of the DA/SA is the fact that when you wake up from a deep sleep your going to be disoriented and your muscle control will be off. I can see how the heavier trigger might be a benefit.

Both will get the job done. Pick the one you shoot best.

For me I would go with a Sig but then I shoot my 226 9mm more then any other pistol.

While a G17 would work quite fine, I think a P226ST Elite w/ 20 round magazine would be quite a nice choice for home defense (and yes, it's going to cost you too).

I use both and alternate them loaded with Gold Dots 124g 9mm HP. Then the GP100 loaded with Corbon .357 mag takes over sometimes on special occasions. I rotate my boys in their duties. Sometimes I let them take vacations too. Wink

In this comparison, I would have to say; whichever pistol is loaded and closest to you.

Both are fine weapons. I shoot both pistols equally well.

You can't lose with either of your choices, since you are choosing between two of the best 9mm pistols ever made (in my opinion).

With that said, I chose the G17.

Man, that's a tough choice to make since both are proven work horses. I went with the G17....but would switch them out every other month or so for variety. Big Grin

Two of the best pistols each company makes. Choose based on which trigger type you prefer. DA/SA or "Glock" trigger.
Then stick with it and practice, practice, practice.
