Don't flick it. I used to flick one of mine as a young person, then years later the smith straightened the crane during a comprehensive check and overhaul.

Well, the Smith & Wesson instructions that came with the revolver states "Push the cylinder back into the frame until it locks into place" so the company itself seems to think it's okay not to use the crane.
