I am looking at my first high-end 1911, and I wanted to know what you guys think of the Performance Center 1911s. How do they compare to the Wilsons, Baers, etc.?

I haven't heard much bad about them. I would put them below Wilsons and Les Baers but above Kimbers.

Are you talking about their real 1911s from the PC or their 945 PC, etc that look sorta like 1911s but arent really?

I dont know about the real 1911s but their 945, etc are super badass. TOP notch pistols all around.

Honestly I havent heard much (legitimate) bad about S&W autos at all. Well, or revolvers, except for that god-forsaken, evil, eat-your-children lock they put on them! Roll Eyes (they dont bother me, personally)

If you're looking "high end" look beyond S&W. Check out a SA TRP or or SA Professional. The TRP should be in the same price range as the S&W and is a much, much better pistol.

There are better options out there in that price range.

Nothing wrong with a s&w pc gun. It just depends on what you want and how much you want to pay. I have owned several guns from the pc and have been completely satisfied. Customer serv is to notch. You can go to the s&w forum and see some vids on the detail that go into the weapons. They actually are pretty cool. I don't want to get into a this is better than that debate, but to answer your question from first hand experience they are good to go.

I'm intrigued by the PC1911s, but there is NO WAY IN HELL I'm plunking down that much money on a 1911 with an external extractor.

Pass.

Among Smith shooters the 945 seems to have a slight edge over the PC 1911. Check the Smith-Wesson board.

I actually like the 845 and 945. Pretty unique and cool pistols.

If you want a nice quality 1911 stick with Springfield Armory Custom Shop.

i was comparing high end productions one evening with Bruce Gray. let me qualify this with the disclaimer that Bruce isn't a big fan of S&W, but it isn't for the same reason that he prefers not to work on the Sig 1911. if you need more detail, you'll have to ask him...bearing in mine that he doesn't usually speak ill of manufacturers.

he says that the Performance Center is a completely different animal than their regular production 1911s and that experience or stories of S&W 1911s have little bearing on their PC line.

now to my opinion:

i would rather have a Performance Center 1911 over a SA TRP and consider it a better buy than a Wilson or a Brown. i think it is comparable to the SA Professional and a hair behind a Baer.

Smith and Wesson does many things well, but I just don't see a 1911 with S&W.

Tang, this is an interesting bit of information. Maybe I should have talked with you and Bruce before I got my PC a few months ago...

it would likely help if i ever answered your e-mail too...i'm just a bad gunner Frown

i really do think the PC guns will give the Baer a run in quality...and i consider the Baer a much better 1911 then the Brown or Wilson

I have never shot a S&W PC 1911 but it would have to be a really nice gun to go up against my Baer TRS. The TRS is a rock solid pistol built with excellent internals and a great reputation. I believe it is the best value to quality ratio in a 1911 right now.

As an owner, or ex owner of all the pistols mentioned above, I put the PC 1911s on par with all of the semi customs out there.

They may not be as pretty as some, they may not be as Tactical as some, they certainly don't have the rep as some.

When it all boils down the S&W 1911 is a shooter, and on par with anything else out there. And that is no BS...

The ONLY bad thing about the PC guns is they know they are that good and charge for it.

Bob

Are you having trouble with your PC 1911? FWIW, I currently have and have had for awhile, a 1911PD the scandiun commander size .45 and it is a fine shooter and have zero problems. It is not a PC gun, but not cheap by no means. They got this one right I suppose. I have had several people shoot this gun and were pleasently surprised it was a S&W. However others experiences may differ. Mine have been good FWIW.

My base S&W has been perfect from day one without any failures in about 1,000 rounds.

I would expect their PC 1911's to display excellent accuracy.

However, for the money, you could get a Les Baer Premier II with a 1 1/2" 50 yard guarantee for a little bit more from John @ Proload Distributors and be happier in the long run.
