Having both and firing both I would chose my Sig P220 Carry SAO. I love the classic look and feel of the 1911 and I simply love the triggers after they have been reworked but in the end I would go with the Sig. Why ? because in the end I think it's a better carry gun and it takes less work to get them 100% reliable and in those situations I think that is what counts.
After spending a great deal of money on my two 1911's I could and would carry them if the need came up but I would go to the Sig first. Actually my carry gun is a P239 in 40 S&W. I own two RIA 1911 in .45ACP. They're nice to work on or just tinker with and they do shoot well. But when the "shit hits the fan", I'll want to rely on my mid 90's W. German P220.
When asked why I carry a .45, I tell 'em I can't find a .46! |

A long time ago I would have said 1911. But it would have to be a high end pistol like a Springer Pro, Wilson, etc, etc. And who wants to spend that much money on a weapon that will get beat up being carried on duty. There are those that will spend the money but not me.
I will have to go with my mid-to-late 90's 220. She's accurate as hell and damn sexy too |

Thought I'd post this for all the hard core Colt fans out there:
This is the Colt Special Combat in hardchrome from the legendary Colt Custom Shop. I'm quite fond of it. It was on its second trip back to Conn. (for one of several manufacturer's defects) when I discovered the excellence of a stamped slide German P220. I really wanted a .45 that I could actually shoot, while the Special Combat was at the factory. Now, I'm reasonably confident that, over the years, SIG has managed to refine the P220 to the point where they're as good today as my Special Combat was when I purchased it. In NH, think they call that progress. |
