Any good 1911. I have Colt and Sig guns.

1. Proven reliability.

2. Better trigger.

3. Greater accuracy, particularly at longer ranges.

4. "Points" more naturally.

Ask yourself this - what did you use at Gunsite or Front Sight?

I think this is because of reliability compared to other semiautos and maintenance (internal extractor tension issues, etc).

More holsters are sold for 1911's then any other pistol on the market by ten fold.

I was thinking more for law enforcement. I think cops choose Glocks, Sigs, H&K's cause of reliability, weight, magazine capacity, etc. The 1911 is the most popular for target shooting competitions cause of trigger, thinness, accuracy, etc. There's a reason why 1911's are the most popular for target shooting but not very popular for cops.

What it boils down to, it's really what you are comfortable with, shoot them both and see what you like, also look for holster availability.

I love 1911 but for me they were picky on what they feed through, then Sig came out with Elite P220 SAO. I left 1911 and never looked back right now is my duty weapon and all around weapon. But this is my taste you should try all of them if possible and see what you really like and its a good fit to you.

good luck

I have a Colt Combat Commander, Novak customized, very reliable and accurate. Spent mucho $$$. My save-my-life gun? Box stock 220 Carry (okay, I did put the short trigger in and put 3M anti skid tape on the front strap).

1911 is great for the range and competition, but in a last minute decision, am I going to remember to hit the safety? I like the simplicity of the DA/SA system, just pull the trigger, and my 220 Carry has not only been flawless with Federal HST and Golden Saber 230s, but it just as accurate, except for the first DA shot. If I have one second to prepare, my hammer on my 220 is coming back anyways, which will in effect be giving me the SA advantage of the 1911.

You have to remember though ... most COPS don't choose their duty weapon, the dept does. That means economics plays a large part in the weapon choice. That and the fact that most COPS are not "gun guys" which means maintenance can be an issue. If you want cheap, low maintenance, and reliability ... you go with Glocks.

Don't get me wrong. I love Glocks.

I'd have to say P220.

I've never had even the slightest bobble with any of the 4 P220's I've owned.

I've owned 7 1911's over the past 20 years, 5 of them have at least bobbled or completely choked at least once, in some cases several times. Yes they can be made reliable but I simply have less confidence in them...even though I enjoy shooting them more than the P220.

What's funny is that if I was given the choice for a duty weapon, I'd still pick a 9mm Glock loaded with Ranger's Bonded round.

And remember people, not all 1911's are created equally...

If I had to choose between those 2 it would be the 220 in a heart beat.

I've never been impressed with the 1911, to picky. One mag work, others don't, dosen't like one ammo over another

I had two West German P-220 I bought in the mid nineties. Stamped slide, old style hammer. I regretably sold one. Still have one yet.

I used to have a springfield and a auto ordenances Gov Models. I sold them.

Out of the box I will take a P 220 any time. Reliable, soft shooting, lightweight. Easy to use, good pointing angle.
But I do like the trigger of a M 1911 and the low bore axis. Many if I can get a reliable out of the box, Commander sized, alloy or scandium framed, with modern combat sights I'm change my opinion. There are not qualified gunsmiths were I live and I cannot send the gun to a US custom smith so those features have to come out of the box.
The full size Govt is to muzzle heavy for me. I point low.

I know it's not the option but for me it's HK. Either a USP or the new HK45. The USP (will carry a couple more rounds {12rds} and the HK45 has better ergo's. The lighter frame is a plus and better reliability IMO. I have P220's, 1911's but HK is much better for that purpose. .02

Since I have to use either out of the box or mildy custom 45s I have also looked as HK as a alternaves to my P 220s. Sadly never liked the grip of the USP but is better for me that the Gocks 45s. Waiting to see if the new HK 45 grip measures up to the hype.

Depends on which 1911 and which P220.

There's a world of difference between a Llamma and a Wilson. There's some significant differences between mid-range Colt's, S&W's, etc and the high-end's too.

Many will point out that the same can be said for the 220, esp given the problems with some of the newer ones.

Thus, I'd probably stick with the HK45/HK45C myself.

Pretty much the same here. I have CC both and bet me and my famly's safety on them.

However currently if I am not carrying my 642 I carry my Colt XSE.

As of right now, i will take my Kimber Pro Carry. I have not felt a better trigger. Never any malfunctions and more accurate than anything else i have ever shot. Other than a rifle with a scope. Also, it is in the same price range maybe 100 more.

I have both, but if I can only have one for the reasons you stated then I would have to go along with RHINOWSO. My chose also!
