Does anybody know why/how the current batch of SP2022 .40s came into existence?

I find the following very curious:

1. A .40 S&W pistol is assembled in Germany
2. It comes with a training barrel
3. It comes with standard trigger

Isn't it a bit unusual for a normal production SIG to include a training barrel? For a U.S. caliber SIG to be assembled in Germany? For a SigPro to come with standard trigger?

I'm suspecting this is a contract overrun, but which agency would order a .40 S&W assembled in Germany, and specify standard triggers? Is there an agency that ordered these and swore SIG to secrecy (like the SAS tried to do with their P226 order long ago)?

Your guess is as good as mine.

40S&W is not popular in Europe so I cant think of any European LE agency that would order them. Maybe they are making them over there to help out because of an increase in domestic demand or a large contract? Who knows....it is kinda wierd the more you think about it.

I remember reading that the SP2022s that went to the French in their huge LE contract came with training barrels.

A training barrel is a plastic barrel that is usually painted bright orange.

You telling me Bud's is sending me a gun with a plastic barrel? Eek What next? Foam bullets?

Guess I need to be checking into their cancellation policy and with no restocking fee......they ought to at least have a disclaimer that the damn thing is coming with a plastic barrel. Damn, I would expect that with a High Pointy or some Jimenez stuff....maybe even Kel-Tec, but Sig. I don't know that they make a plastic I would trust as a barrel?

Damn Mad

Is my 9mm 2022 gonna come like that too? Hell, I'll just go back to revolvers. This semi-auto experiment stuff freaks me out.

One can only assume that after the SP2022 in the oven incident, those plastic training barrels have probably saved thousands of French LEOs lives. Wink

I had to think a little bit before I reached the conclusion that BamaSigger is just kidding. For the benefit of those who may be even slower to catch on than I am...

The training barrel is included IN ADDITION TO a real barrel (made of metal, and colored black!).

I used the search function and couldn't find it. What is the story behind this? Sounds like a Darwin award in the making.

The story I read went something like this. A French police officer just finished cleaning a SP2022 and put the frame in the oven to dry it off.....apparently the officer was distracted because it came out of the oven looking like this.

I am reminded of former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders comment that we need, "safer weapons and safer bullets."
Apparently they exist. Smile

when cleaning his gun I wonder if he used soap and water? I would've just put it in the dish washer...set it and forget it.

Use thumb-size bullets to create fist-size holes.

What a shame...one fine pistol forced out of circulation forever.

The SigPro is probably 100% made in Germany anyways, since it would be cheaper to make them at one factory then to make a second set of tooling here in America for a gun that doesn't sell all that well.

As far as the solid orange training barrel, police departments use these. You remove the regular barrel and replace with the training barrel when you are training recruits on building clearing, felony stops, weapons retention drills, etc. Reduces the chance of an AD to 0%.

It's rare to see them fully assembled in DE nowadays, with accompanying CID proofing, for U.S. sale. Even the 9mm version I got recently, with German made slide and frame, was proofed in the U.S.

It makes me wonder if this is some type of overrun where the order called for Ifalon finish, so they were assembled in Germany. Just guessing, trying to come up with a reason for this latest batch. These are certainly an enigma.
