I love my 228, in fact I don't see it making it's way off my primary carry gun... EVER. That said, I am wanting to add a nightstand 228(R) to the fold, because bad things happen in the dark. I'm wondering if SIG ever made a folded slide, railed frame 228? I am heavily invested in 228 and 226 mags, so I don't really feel like expanding the collection into a stack of 229-1 mags. If memory serves, I think I remember my 228 mags fitting correctly in my 2003 vintage 229, but I've sold that gun. I'm assuming I can probably do a frame swap like I just did on one of my 226 9's, into a railed 229R lower with a 228 folded steel upper(with a 9mm locking block). Is there an older 229R frame I should look for, or any outward signs I can readily look for to see how my 228 mags will fit? I'd assume nothing made in Exeter, also not with the E2 grip, as those will almost certainly be 229-1 lowers. If anyone would know.... The group of people here would certainly be in the know. | ||

IIRC, they did. It was more of a parts bin emptying project than a real model. They had some stamped slides left over, and mated them to railed P229 frames, and sold them as P228Rs. For a house gun, why not use a P226R? The longer barrel wouldn't be an issue. And, if you don't have on already, those will be vastly easier to find. | |||

Yes, SIG did make the P228R in 2009 and then 2010. It uses the frame of the P229(9) at the time, which uses the old P228/P229(9) mag. Around 2009 or so is when SIG went with the .40/.357 frame for its 9mm P229, so this newer P229(9) uses the 229-1 (aka E2) mag. So, to use this frame for the P228 upper, yes, you will need the P228/old P229 locking insert. Externally, you will not be able to tell the difference between the frames. But, best bet is, if you see a P229(9) Frame Made In Germany, it will be the old frame, and you will not need a new locking insert. I was wondering if ALL the German railed 229s were the 228 mag well vs the 229-1. So thats at least a quick way to narrow my search. As for the reasoning of the 228 vs 226, the grip has to be small enough for the wife as well. 228 is on the verge of too large, and the 226 is a no go. If there was a 225/p6 with a rail, that would probably be the one she'd want. | |||

Does it use standard 228 mags? And how do they fit? That's pretty much exactly what I want to be into, just don't want to have to invest in a stack of 229-1 mags to prevent the rattle. | |||

I was overcome with excitement  just had to make sure...Now if I can find a seller that can actually confirm which mags their pistol takes, I'll be in business. Seems like most have no idea what they have. | |||

Just an update to any that are watching.. Apparently not all German made frames are the older 228 sized mag well (many here probably already knew that). Other than plugging magazines in, I haven't found a easy way to determine what mag well it is. Kind of a pain in the a$$ to do across the internet. Luckily I figured this out before I spent the money. | |||

wait a second... After reading this thread, something dawned on me.... Can I use P226 9mm mags in my P228??? I think I can based on what I read. I would bet someone makes an adapter for P226 mags to fit in the p228. But I'm willing to bet P226 9mm mags are a no-go in a P229-1 9mm, or M11. correct? Wow, I've been a P228 owner for almost 10 years, and this just now dawned on me. I can get a couple of more rounds by buying P226 mags  Other than the extra grip length/weight is there any downside? ---------------------- Let's Go Brandon! | |||

Yes, you can use P226 magazines in a P228. And yes, there is an adaptor. From Top Gun Supply: http://www.topgunsupply.com/x-grip-sig-p228-p229.html P226 mags will insert and lock into a P229-1 frame but will wobble a bit. I know guys who used 13 round P228 mags in their P229 .40's with the conversion barrel. Not ideal, bit they will work. | |||
