So heres the deal. I am 51 years old, and I wear bifocals. I would like to get a fiber optic front sight for my S&W M&P Shield on 9mm. I would like one that will hold up to life on a CCW gun, and not get knocked off.

What manufacturer of sight can you guys recommend?

I have these on a couple (more soon) of my carry pistols, they are sturdy and the orange really makes the front sight stand out.

I don't advocate for fiber optics on carry pistols because I had a couple of those little light pipes fall out during firing. Maybe they got that problem solved by now. I do advocate for Trijicon HD night sights for geezers like me. A great big notch in the rear sight and the big orange or green dot on the front sight looks like a basketball in daylight compared to other sights. Plus they are great night sights.

I went with Fiber optic + tritium TFX- Pro

I started with a TFO front and black rear on my 229 .40
Didn't like it and put the X-ray3 I had on it instead.
This is my bedside gun with a TLR-8 so night sights aren't really a concern on that one.

I swapped out the X-ray3 sights for Speedsights on my Legion. Can't miss that diamond and POA is the tip of the diamond.

I have Trijicon HD XR sights on my M11-A1 with red dot that I really like.

My 220 had 8/8 sights so I was able to use a set of Ameriglo I-Dots with a red front dot. I like those too.

My Selects sights are off and I used the TFO on it to get it shooting POA/POI. It had 6/6 sights from the factory.
Still don't like the sights and am waiting on a 229 RX slide for it.

I'm in my 50's , wear bifocals etc. and have tried more than a couple sights out.

I put night sights on my CCW gun.

When I was a cop we had to qual with our off duty guns, and night sights are worth the money.

I have FO front on all my self defense pistols, I'm rough on them and have taken classes with them and I can only remember one breaking in the last 5 or 6 years. I use prescription glasses and I rather have the FO as I can easily pick up the front sight even without my glasses, night sights are hard to see in my case without glasses.

I'm 58. I had cataract surgery a couple of years ago. As such, my eyes can't focus on BOTH front and rear sights. I EDÇ a Kimber Pro Carry II. I had the OEM rear sight notch milled out to a .156-inch U-notch. The OEM red FO sight is now Neon Green. I love it!

I do have FO on a couple of my handguns but none on my EDC pistols. I'm 56 & my sights are fuzzy too. I can get good hits to 15 yds + even without my glasses but the cure I found was adding a Trijicon RDS. It solves all issues. It works no matter if you wear glasses or not & it's the best "night sight" out there. Battery life is measured in years. ( just leave it on) My speed on target & accuracy have improved tremendously at any distance & I can shoot both eyes open or close one if I prefer. It has been a game changer for me & many others. It's pricey to mill your slide & add the rds & taller iron sights but for me, it was worth every penny.

I think Dawson Precision makes the best fiber optic sights out there.

All my guns have FO front sights and black rears. They are plenty durable.

Lucky you! The FO sight has broken at least once on all my pistols so equipped.

I think you meant 'cataracts'. They're easily dealt with these days with very improved vision as a result. See your eye specialist.

Hi all. I know this is an old thread but thought it would be better to revive than start a new thread for my first post.

I got the Wilson Combat P320 last year which come with a fiber optic front sight. I started off shooting at an indoor range with no issues. In March I joined a gun club with outdoor ranges and one range where holster draw is allowed.

I started practicing with a Mitch Rosen holster for the stock P320. After several trips to the range I noticed the FO had become slightly loose, would move back and forth slightly. Then one day I went to aim and the FO was gone.

WC carries replacement rods which are inexpensive so I ordered 10 and replaced the one that came out. I made sure the rod was tight after heating the ends.

Also, earlier this month was birthday so I asked for and got a Milt Sparks holster WC had made for their version of the P320. It has a channel in the holster for the front sight so I thought that would protect the FO. But when I went to the range Friday I noticed the new rod was slightly loose like what happened the first time.

Do I need to just consider the rod a consumable part? I go to the range once a week and fire around 200-250 rounds with a lot of holster draw.

^^ I have a fiber optic on my USPSA STI EDGE gun. It uses a tiny red fiber and can be broken easily.

I have them on two Ruger MK22/45 22 pistols. They get broken occasionally due to use.

Yes it’s a consumable item. Buy more. Keep a bic lighter in your range bag…and a multi tool and you can replace it when it happens.

On my EDC guns I use night sights. I am a retired policeman and we had to qualify in day and night courses to carry. So trijicon or meprolite sights go on those. Plus I can see the front sight at night in my dark home. Also put a night sight on my home defense shotgun. I can see it w/o my glasses and in the normal darkness of the home.

Welcome to the forum.

All my commonly shot pistols have Dawson front fiber optic sights. To include those I might or do carry. I was firmly set on having front night sights but I weighed all the issues, and for me, fiber is good enough.

The fiber optic rod, correctly installed in a good quality sight, rarely fails on me. This in many thousands of rounds in multiple pistols including 9mm Glocks, CZ and my .40 caliber CZ.

They are a maintenance item but I usually only change them twice a year as they get dull from soot. The biggest issue I think is cleaning solvents weakening the fiber. I use pretty mild stuff and keep it off the front sight best I can.

I have had Williams fiber optic sights on my Glock 43 for years now without issue.
