So I finally picked one up. I've always wanted a 1911 but never did because of funds and wasn't sure what to get. Today I picked up a brand new Dan Wesson Specialist, mostly because of peoples reviews here. Couldn't be happier. Feels like it was made for my hand.
I want to get a couple more magazines for it but being new to them I could use some schooling from the group. Where would be a good place to go for mags for it? Do I need to buy factory DW mags or is there a high quality aftermarket you'd recommend? Also, are there specific mags I need to get for it or is there a standard where a certain style will fit multiple brands?
I feel stupid for having to ask this but I just don't have any experience with a 1911.

Congrats on an outstanding 1911. DW is the bomb.

Obviously, you'll need magazines for whatever caliber you have. There are really good after market magazines out there. Just a few are:

It's a 45. Looking at the Chip McCormick website, I take it that any one that says its for a full size 1911 would fit? Are they all standard among different brands?

Wilson Combat 47D. My go to 1911 magazine.

All the suggestions given above are great. One of the nice things about owning a 1911 in .45 ACP is the abundance of reasonably priced, great magazines available.

I prefer Wilson Combat ETM magazines for carry, and Wilson 47Ds for range use.

I love the Tripp Cobra mags. They are flawless for me. The Wilson 47D is a great option too, but they haven’t been perfect like the Tripps.

Congratulations on your new DW 1911!

As you can see, magazine options abound. If you can, try 1 or 2 of each to find the one(s) that you / your 1911 “like” the best.

I’ll toss-in my personal choice: the Wilson Combat 47. Note, this is the full-size (Government / Commander size) .45 ACP magazine of Wilson’s with a 7-round capacity vs. the 8-round 47D. Just personal preference. I like to get mine direct from Wilson when possible, and I prefer the low-profile steel basepad with them.

This might apply to any new 1911 (or other mag), but it’s been a good tip for me I’ve followed after receiving new Wilson 47s: load them up and let them sit a little before their first range trip. A few days, a week or two, etc. It seems to help the springs a bit.

You will love your DW 1911!

I have a lot of different 1911 mags. I think in your shoes I would go for some McCormicks. They are great but not expensive with special features that you don’t really need as you work your first 1911.

Almost any brand will fit and function for range use. Just stay away from Pro-Mag. Wilson 47D's, as mentioned, are probably the best on the market.

I use ONLY Mec-Gar mags from Greg Cote in all my 1911s, Sigs and CZ's.
Never a problem in any of my guns when using Mec-Gar mags.
Just sayin'

Congrats. Enjoy your DW. My opinion will seem out of place, but I've had problems with my Chip McCormick mags. Small sample size. I use WC and Tripp Research.

I use Wilson Mags almost exclusively. Something you will not probably hear is that the Ed Brown mags I bought were crap. Now I sent them back to Ed Brown and they checked them and replaced them but to many good mags to take a chance with them. McCormick's are good just be careful with the 10 rounders some will not seat properly.
