I use Chip McCormick, Wilson, Tripp, Ed Brown, Metalform. The Wilson 47D doesn't work as well for me as the others, I have a ton of Chip and they work great.

I updated EOM Springfield magazines with Tripp innards and now they run better with my Champion.

Wilson 47Ds work just fine long term, as long as you remember that they are a 40+ year old design originally intended as a way to have 7+1 in the 1911 after a reload, instead of the 6+1 of a standard 7 round 1911 magazine of that day.

That is, 47Ds were not intended to be carried with 8 in the magazine plus 1 in the chamber. Fully loaded 47Ds were intended to be inserted with the slide locked back, to end up with 7+1 once the slide is released. In some 1911s, they won't even seat when the slide is forward and the magazine is fully loaded with 8 rounds. And doing so can overstress the internals.

The 7 round 47s and 8 round 47Ds use the same magazine body and spring, with just a slight follower change to allow for barely enough room for fitting the 8th round inside the magazine body.

The newer Wilson ETMs, on the other hand, are specifically designed for 8+1 carry.

Hence why I use ETMs for serious use and 47Ds for range use. (It helps that I was able to get about a dozen lightly used 47Ds for around $8 each.)

Rogue,

Now, truth be told I am FAR from a 1911 guru but I pride myself on having a little knowledge far and wide. I have to say I did not know this about the 47D’s. Appreciate the insight.

Chris.

In my experience, the 7-round Wilson Combat 47 delivers all of the above. I prefer the 47s with Wilson’s low-profile steel baseplate.

RogueJSK,

Understood about the 47D (I don't own any. But what about the 47OXC 7 round Officer's size magazine (I have some)? Same caveats?

Thanks Rogue! I have read off-hand comments to that affect over the years, but no one ever explained it the way you did. I now understand the objections some people have to the 47d mags.

Despite my strenuous adherence to only using 7-round Wilson 47s in my full-size 1911s, I went the opposite direction regarding magazines for a DW CCO a few years ago and used that very magazine you mention, the 47OXC. I had several (6, I believe) for that gun and had no problems with them.

I have no explanation or excuse for my own hypocrisy haha... Smile

Great to know, thank you, as I picked up a bunch for my DW CCOs. Just haven't used them yet. They seat just fine. Smile

The Wilson ETMs all stick out, to accommodate the 8th round, and they have composite baseplates. However, there are two models, one with a narrow baseplate that is the same width as the mag body, and the other with a wider baseplate (which may, or may not, work in guns with a magwell).

I use Tripp research or Wilson with a Tripp conversion kit

The Wilson tube is really nice, but their follower is weak and the 47 springs suck. The Wilson ETM has worked well too.

If you want seven round mags just about any will work ok... just buy the one you get at the best price...

Eight round mags require some thought in choice of brands...

I use McCormick; Mec-Gar; ACT (who makes a lot of mags for gun makers to use with their new guns) and a few others. I have a few Wilson mags, but don't really see any particular advantage to them. I also look for magazines on sale which happens fairly frequently...

I buy my mags mostly from Gregg Cote, or from Gunmag Warehouse. Both have fast service and have proved to be really good to do business with.

Congrats on your first Dan Wesson. It sounds like the bug bit you and you will soon acquire more. I started with a full size specialist. Now have commander size specialist in both 9mm and .45acp. I also picked up two Guardians in both 9mm and .45acp. Yes, it is an addiction.

I know I have replied to this but one other thing came to my mind.

Just because a particular magazine is a gold standard doesn’t mean YOUR gun will like it. All the mags mentioned here are great magazine choices, but with a 1911 I suggest you buy a single test magazine before going all in. For example Wilson makes some of the best 1911 mags in the business and you will find few who disagree. I have however experienced a 1911 or 2 that just didn’t like them. Doesn’t make them bad magazines just makes the 1911 a more....well personal platform so to speak. At the end of the day it is a century old design and there is still some design wiggle room so to speak due to hand fitting, extractor tensioning etc. etc.

Point is just because everybody says buy Wilson or McCormick or Tripp etc etc., which are all FIRST RATE HIGH QUALITY magazines, try before you stack deep. My two cents anyway.

Keep in mind I am just a hobbiest and don’t know shit about shit so always keep take my advice with a grain of salt and see it through hobbiest eyes not expert eyes.

Take care, shoot safe
Chris.

I prefer Check-Mates, particularly in the follow configurations:

7 rounders: Welded baseplate, hybrid feed lip, fully skirted/dimpled follower, carbon steel, extra power spring

8 rounders: Extended tube, hybrid feed lip, skirted/dimpled follower, extra power spring

I also am a big fan of CerTac's 8 round, extended tube stainless, semi-wadcutter feed lip, skirted/non-dimpled follower

I have a preferece towards carbon steel as opposed to stainless steel, as I think it has less of a predelection for feed lip splay (although none of my personal magazines in stainless from Check-Mate have been afflicted).

In a Commander, I'm a strong believer in the essentiality of extra-power springs and the skirted/dimpled follower.

While 8 round welded baseplate magazines can work, inevitably you're stuffing 8 rounds in a volume intended for 7, so there's very little margin operationally; in welded baseplate non-extende magazines, I strongly recommend sticking with the 7 round variants (or, if you have 8 rounders, only load them with 7 rounds)

Spoiler alert: I'm one of Check-Mate's sponsored shooters, and have been for some 10 years, but that came about due to my genuine appreciation with their magazines-both 1911 and Beretta.

Best, Jon

I’ve used lots of different 1911 mags over the last 30+ years ... McCormick, Wilson, surplus GI, Kimpro(mine weren’t reliable even in my Kimbers) ... one that has performed great for me and I never would have bought, but 3 came with my SiG Tac-Ops 1911 they hold 8 rounds and they’ve been flawless in all my 1911’s so I bought another 6 and they’ve been just as good.

If you really want something you'll find a way ...
... if you don't you'll find an excuse.

I'm really not a "kid" anymore ... but I haven't grown up yet either Wink
