So yesterday I noticed some wear marks on the black frame of my new STI Guardian. Today I got the urge to um...remove all of the black coating from the frame so it would like nice and pretty. It's actually turned out fairly well so far. What do you guys think? Flame suit on Red Face

I still have a lot of work to do.

if it is not stainless, you have just removed any corrosion resistance that finish gave you. If you are ok with that, power to you. I hate my stainless slide on my NH P220ST, that rusts a lil in my climate controlled safe, so i cannot imagine myself with polished carbon steel frame.

If you want a shine....600 grit wet/dry--1000 grit wet/dry--mag polish.

Nice job!

STI lists the frame as blued steel, and the slide as stainless. As stated above, you removed the corosion resistant finish applied by the MFG. You may want to look into some kind of clear kote, or send it to Mahovskys Metalife for a Electroless nickle or Metalife finish. Or keep it constantly oiled and don't touch it. Big Grin

My Dremel's named "007" and until I got smart it facilitated a steady revenue stream for several gunsmiths.

+1

Leave coatings on steel frames alone. There are very few guns where you can safely polish off the finish (Anything with tennifer is usually OK or when the metal underneath is stainless).

If you think gun magazines are objective or honest, when's the last time they wrote a truly negative review of a firearm? Do you really think all of those pre-production models they're shooting run as reliably and shoot as accurately as they say they do?

90% of gun malfunctions can be attributed to poor ammo (reloads, Russian, etc.), lack of maintenance, weak springs, cheap magazines, or improper technique. When a well-trained shooter using a wide variety of high quality ammunition fed from a reliable, self-leveling magazine shoots your gun after it's gone through a through inspection, spring replacement, and cleaning, and still has problems, then it's the gun. Until then, the problem is YOU.

WOW!!! I love this forum. What a great bunch of people. Great advice, information and they are so very generous!

I had a slide refinished with CCR's Cerahide and that is great stuff. It is a tough finish and is very easy to clean. I love it and I am thinking of sending in my P229 Elite slide to get the house black.

You should jump on this right away!!!
