That's the exact reason I picked the 1911. I'd say the excuses were reasonable until the late 70's or so. There are great 1911's out there, but you really have to spend a ton to get them.

Absolute BS/internet mythology.

You can get an entry level Springfield GI for about the price of a Glock (LESS than a new Sig) that has a good reputation for reliability.
The Colt Commander in my avatar is my favorite pistol hands down. It's been 100% reliable through 2000 rds (all kinds of ammo) and is very accurate as well. It set me back $750.

Sorry if this wanders a bit to the side of the original topic-
My brother and his family came by for pizza last night and I showed him this thread, and it got us cahtting about all the pistols we've owned and which did/didn't work out of the box-
His take of "over rated" was more the point that the product should work out of the box, and he said alot of guns are not only over rated but dissapointing.

Ruger MKII .22 x3 guns, other than an occasional mag lip needing to be adjusted, good to go.
Smith revolvers- 624 back to the factory twice for misaligned barrel.
M36, misaligned barrel.
M57, .41 mag, first shot sheared the screw which holds the cyl release bar.
M60, M28 & M10, no problems.
M39 he bought as an offduty, jamamatic no mater what was done by a smith.
M59 was my offduty, after the feedramp was polished it ran flawlessly.

Kimber Gold Match, no problems.
Kimber Classic, polish ramp then no problems.
STI Trojan 9mm 1911, 4k rounds and never a jam.
Colt stainless Gold Cup- nightmare, back to Colt and said nothing wrong, Les Baer fixed it when he was still at Springfield- rough recoil faceplate by the firingpin hole.

Walther P99, wrong recoil spring from factory, new spring cured stovepipes.
Kahr P9 and K9, blend slide stop to fix premature slide lock back.
Beretta Minx & Jetfire, no problems.
Beretta M92, no problems.
His G17 & G19 Glocks, no problems (my Glock headaches already posted)

Ruger- SP101, SuperBlackhawk and abused Blackhawk, never a problem.
P90 .45, jams when dirty

Colt Pythons x3, never a problem.
Colt SAA's, 5 are safequens so they don't count, 2 are shot alot with no problems.
Colt SAA New Frontier .44spl, a zillion handloads and still going strong.

Sig P220 & 226 9mm's no problems.

So at the end of our conversation we agreed that it was interesting how many guns needed help right out of the box and that many different brands had flaws which soured our opinions.

Broad generalization and silly.

Wrong.

OK . Six times more.

I far as I see it, this thread's got 1911 ALL OVER IT. Every single page got at least 1-1911 post.

You're right. Everybody is saying it so it must be true.

If they were so good , why do people hate it?

The same reason some people hate sweet tea. We all have different tastes. We are on a Sig forum after all. Go check out a 1911 forum and post this poll there and you will get different results and posts.

But maybe the best way to answer your question is with another question.

If it sucks so bad, why is it still so popular?

Well up until last week I would have said the 1911 for sure. I have never owned one and always wondered what the big deal was about them. Like u say everyones tastes are different but it just didnt appeal to my looks wise.I have never owned one or shot one until i shot one clip through my buddy's Colt 1991 A1 last week. And I must say It impressed the heck out of me. They always seemed blocky and just looked uncomfortable and old school. But it was very comfortable to shoot and out of eight rounds at about 12 yards or so I ended up with one BIG hole and two small ones almost touching the big one Smile Prol the most accurate I have ever shot a hand pistol let alone one I had just picked up for the first time ever>>>>>>

Exactly. Just because you cheaped out and got a jammomatic shit 1911 doesnt mean good self-defense worthy ones arent out there, right out of the box. DW comes to mind, or SA. What about Wilson?

Also why do some of the most elite "operators" who get to pick whatever they want to trust their life on still, STILL, pick 1911s so often?

I guess some people just hate metal guns! If its not a Glock its not perfect, huh?

Me? I like all guns, I think the most overrated guns may have to be...hmmm, XDm, maybe? I like the regular XD just fine, although 20rds of 9mm is impressive.

And yes, they are very accurate for most people.

I have owned them all except the xd. I say 1911 is way overrated and I have owned more of them over the years than the rest combined.I would trust Sig, Glock, Beretta, HK USP, and maybe XD
right out of the box. No way would I with a 1911. The 1911 supports hundreds of gunsmiths across the country and has a thriving parts industry revolving around it.
