All handguns are overated. Wink

Any pistol with a "Kool-Aid" fan base is going to fit into the category, and your list certainly has some of the top ones in it.

In contrast, over the last 25 years I've found myself more attracted to "sleepers" that always seem to work, but never attracted a rabid fan club.

In my eyes anything with the name Colt on it . Dollar for dollar every clone is a better gun ,They may not have the following or resale but I think that pony on the slide costs about $300 . $300 is alot of upgrades or a lot of ammo . I own Colt AR and two Colt 1911's .Mike

1911

Too many people think the 1911 holds some kind of mystical powers giving it heat seaking accuracy and the 45 ACP some kind of power that will knock down a target no matter where he is hit (even if it's the pinky finger).

Glock. Then P7. They don't do it for me, and other pistols do ... and much better. I don't know why.

I like Glocks. As noted above, I am "simple." It took me years to realize that simple is a virtue when it comes to selecting a life protecting tool.

I voted 1911 as most over-rated. But I would certainly trust my life to a reliable one (and to any of the others on the list--again, with the qualifier "reliable").

A new colt 1911 cost less than a kimber of Springfield these days. When all the prices went up after obama fever colts didn't. Old colts hold a premium but a new Combat Elite costs about as much as a plain jane Kimber Custom II and is a much better gun.

I voted 1911. IMHO, it takes too much of an investment financially to get a good one that will run reliably. As far as several people voting for the PPK, I disagree. The German produced PP series were of out-standing quality and reliabilty. When many people think of the PPK now adays, they are probably referencing Interarms and S&W models to form a view point. A classic West German produced PPK makes for a great concealed carry price. Even though 7,65mm and 9mm kurz are considered marginal calibers, in the end it is shot placement that really counts.

Glocks. Good guns, but not magic.

1911s. Same - good guns, but not magic. And I love them, but I still think they are overrated.

I say Glock.
-----------------
1911 - good gun, pros and cons well known

Browining High Power - good gun, pros and cons well known

Sig P-Series - Best of the lot, but they've taken their lumps

HK P7 - Not that well known

Walther PPK - ??? if anything, its under-rated, so very frequently criticized. Its not bad for a .380; having said that, .380s generally aren't great.

Springfield XD - Not that well known

Beretta 92 F/FS - Next to Glock, most overrated, most likely b/c of adoption by U.S. Armed Forces, similar to AR, not bad but nothing to brag about

CZ-75 - Not that well known
----------------------------------

Glock is the most overrated mainly b/c fanboys push myths of indestructablity, reliablity etc. that no pistol could live up to, much less a lower top-tier one like Glock.

Glock makes good 9mm pistols, but their 45s aren't much. And their 40s just plain stink. I've got a 26, good gun. I don't think much of the safety system, though. With one in the chamber, its like Condition 0.25 .

1911. If you have to have a 45acp there are ore reliable and less expensive choices. Unless you have the time and money to spend tinkering to make one run right, then by all means 1911.

Springfield Armory XD Tactical 9mm
SIG Sauer P220 DAK .45acp
Benelli Nova Tactical 12 ga.
Smith and Wesson M&P 15 OR 5.56mm

As was said earlier, "1911" is too broad a brush. I have a frame ready for a build. If I throw a bunch of parts in it haphazardly and sell it to somebody and it doesn't work, is it fair that all 1911's get blamed? IT was also the only pistol without a manufaturer's name attached so it should be "included out"

I based my decision (PPK) on what the pistol actually accomplishes when it works as designed, from an optimistic standpoint.

I own or have owned 6 of the guns on the list and have fired all but the XD but I have handled them.

the Glock debate is intersting to me because mine, a 22 has the same reliability record as my CZ-P06 and Sigpro 2340-perfect. I just like the CZ and the Sig more and shoot them better. Early this year I benchrested all three and found that the Glock was the least accurate in my limited test. Does that mean it is over rated? No, it performs as advertised do I think the "fans" make too much of it? Yes, because it doesn't do anything other pistols don't. But there are enough people saying the same thing as I to balance the scales.

The"Cult" following of the PPK has given it an "aura" that it does not deserve IMO. People who have never fired one, some who have never held one, think it must be great. Given it's production numbers compared to the Glock There aren't enough experienced shooters who are happy with the PPK to justify it's reputation, unlike the number of people happy with the Glock.

My .02

Y say Glocks, M 1911, Browning HP, Beretta 92F, and Walter PPKs in that other.

Glocks, fine in 9mm Para (I own a G 19), dubious in other calibers, mushy trigger, weird grip feeling. They are overall great guns in 9mm especially but they are overated, some Glockeros seems to believe the Glock is the only handgun worth having and are like moonies in their belief of Glock`s publicity.

M 1911s, for me they are the best shooting hanguns for a range but they are usually heavier and less reliable than more modern designs out of the box. Fine for their time, I owned two clones and would own one in the future, but as a range gun, not for self defense. I rather use SIGs or Glocks for that purpose. Like the Glock they has a oxnobious moonie like following that say that the gun can walk on water.

Browning HP. Almost a mystical following in Latin america, A gun that was fine for her time but is heavier, less durable, has a magazine safety, bad trigger, bad sights in all but the MK III, in most models small and mushy manual safeties. All of this in a single action pistol. Despite the popularity over here, I never has owned one.

Beretta 92 F, another pistol with a mystical following south of the border, pretty, accurate and reliable, but the ergonomics suck big time. I rather has a SIG P series when searching for a DA/SA pistol. Sold mine, probably will never buy another.

Walther PPK. Slide bite, horrible trigger, poor caliber, I rather have a J Frame, never owned one for more than a few days and often as a bargaining chip/range gun.

Undertated.

SIG P series, believe or not many non gun people does not even recognices the brand (unlike Colt, Walter or Glock) and they do well what a DA/SA pistol is designed to do. If you do not like them is because you do not like DA/SA, not becasue they are overrated as a brand. Few Koolaid drinkers among their fans, if fact SIG fans seems to be perfectionist and self floggers regarding the brand.

Springfield XD. Few non gun people knows about them, few Koolaid drinkers among their fans.

CZ 75, same as the above, I love them!

And a though call, HK P 7, I love them and I would buy one if the price is right, they do fill the hype (I have shoot them) but the price is never right!!!

Sig P 220-1, S&W 586, S&W 640, S&W M 12, S&W M 17-3, S&W 18, S&W M 14, Glock 19, Remington M 870.

Voted Walther PPK, I've had several over the years and not one of them EVER worked properly, even with FMJ ammo. So, IMO the PPK outright sucks.

Of the choices, I had to go with the PPK. It's heavy, weak, with low capacity, a crappy trigger and a tendency to bite the hand that shoots it. Yeah, it looks sexy in the right lighting with some superstar shooting bad guys with it from 300 yards, but it really doesn't live up to the billing.

Regards,

Kevin

I think we should have a clarification. Overrated doesn't necessarily means something "sucks". Its more often not, saying its merely not as great as some claim it to be.
