After reading many of your posts, it seems the 228/229 are the most favored Sig's. My question is simply, why? What is it about them that makes every Sig addict have to have one? Also, if you could only have one, which would it be, and what caliber?

If I could only have 1 of either, it would be an old school all-German P228 undoubtedly.

The 228 is a nice pistol, but to me the best ever Sig is still the 226.

Without a moment's hesitation: P229, DAK trigger, chambered for 357 SIG.

I think the overall balance and feel of the P228 combined with the fact that (at least the originals) didn't have any rails and they have a nicely rounded trigger guard. To me, this all adds up to a very sexy smooth look. On top of that, it's pretty size efficient. You really don't lose much when down sizing from the P226.

Same reason the 19/23 are the Holy Grail of Glocks. Small enough to concealed carry, but big enough that they are enjoyable to shoot. And good capacity, and overall size.

228 - I think it is the combination of a very good well balanced pistol and that it is not currently made so it addds to the aura of the "not so easily obtainable".

229 can't tell you. Got a few, like the 226s better.

Now for me the P210 was the "Holy Grail"

Good luck

Exactly! Great all-purpose gun. The 226 is larger and in my view a good combat choice, the P6 is slender and much easier to conceal but sacrifices capacity. The 228 sort of falls niely in between.

Honestly, you need one of both. The 228 is all german made, with the folded slide and is only chambered for 9mm. The 229 can shoot 9mm, 357 sig or 40 s/w, and all three with simple barrel swaps. The 229 can be had SA/DA or DAO, and in a variety of variations (blue, 2 tone, all stainless, beavertail, short trigger, etc). I have 2 228s & 3 229s and would add another in a heartbeat. . .

I used to love the P229 that is until I acquired a P228! The 228 is the perfect size, weight, balance, capacity for me. It's the all around do everything gun HD, CCW, Range.

Not to mention the great quality all german made folded slide goodness.

For me, the 228/229 family is equally at home in a good belt holster, tucked in a fanny-pack-style bag, or hidden deep in a Kramer Confidant holster-shirt, and could just as easily ride in a duty rig in an "official" capacity if needed...that's a lot of versatility from one platform...not that others can't do the same (Glock 19, etc.)...but I'd want a SigSauer! :-)

Though I've owned and carried a few 228s and a 9mm 229, I'm eagerly anticipating a 229 in .40 and have just ordered a used .357Sig barrel from one of our own forum members...combining dual-caliber capability to the scene should make it just about perfect for me!

Love my 229, but gotta go with previous posters. the holy grail is a German 226. Try one, you'll know why.

Because they are damn good pistols. My 229 is my go to for confidence.

This seems to be a common mis-conception. The P225/P6 is no slimmer or easier to conceal than a P228. It is slightly thinner at its widest point but only by an amount that makes no appreciable difference (less than .080" if I remember correctly). The grip feels smaller in the hand because the circumference is smaller, but in width it isn't different enough to notice.

Although the frame is narrower, the grips on the P225 are much thicker than the grips on the P228 so they actually basically balance out in the width department. Length and height are very similar as well.

With the P228 you get basically all the same dimensions as a P225 and almost twice the capacity. The only real weight difference comes from the extra ammo.

The P229 on the other hand is one of the chunkiest guns IMO, the slide is just massive. I really dislike the P229 but the P228 is a pretty good all around size/weight for carry and shooting comfort.

Because its the baddest combat/all around pistol money can buy. Its like a compromise, without the compromise. The best of both worlds, one might say. Cool

Just My Opinion, of course.

I wouldn't call those the "Holy Grail". Holy Grail suggests that they're impossible to obtain which is obviously not the case.

I'm more of a p226 kind of guy though.

I wouldn't say either is the "holy grail," but they are great pistols.

The 228 is one of my all time favorites, fits my hand like the proverbial glove, perfect balance, accurate, "just right" size, but all that is pretty subjective.

I like a lot of other sigs and guns too, but 228 is strong contender for #1. 229 is not nearly as pleasing to me, other than I like .40 better than 9.

Sig 210 owners might not agree about 228s and 229s being the holy grail.
