I picked up a few Mec-Gar 18 round mags recently and another 9mm X-Change kit that came with a factory marked Mec-Gar P229-1 17 round mag. Of course the mags are 15 rounders with plus 2 or plus 3 floorplates.

Why the difference? My question is directed to the reason for the 17 round mag instead of just having 18 rounders instead.

I've found that their P228 17-rounders can only hold 16, and the 18-rounders 17. If you try very hard, you can jam that last round in, but then, you won't be able to fully seat the mag.

Just came back from the range. I loaded the one 17 rounder and two 18 rounders four times and ran them through my new P229 with 9mm X-Change kit without a hiccup.

Luckily, I had no issues with loading to full capacity or seating the mag. The only issue was that when the 18 round mags were fully loaded, the rounded jiggled around.
