This is the reply I just recieved from the Bundespolizeipräsidium. I translated but yea I know I messed up a couple of words. I thought you all would want the official word even though we had it right.

Dear Mr. White, thank you for your email. I spoke with our specialists. The notch in the hammer is " more so called; Bruchsporn". There it is to in order determining with the examination of the weapon whether this is fallen to ground. That is, if the hammer is inclined or the notch is deformed, the weapon is pleased to ground and must be submitted a special investigation regarding your operability. Sehr geehrter Herr White,

vielen Dank für Ihre E-Mail. Ich habe mit unseren Fachleuten gesprochen. Die Kerbe im Hammer ist ein so genannter "Bruchsporn". Er ist dazu da, um bei der Überprüfung der Waffe festzustellen, ob diese zu Boden gefallen ist. Das heißt, wenn der Hammer schief ist oder die Kerbe verformt ist, ist die Waffe zu Boden gefallen und muss einer besonderen Untersuchung hinsichtlich Ihrer Funktionsfähigkeit unterzogen werden.
