Hello Everyone,
I have a Browning Hi Power Mark III (1993) that I purchased about a month ago. I'm contemplating wheather I should remove the magazine disconnect or not? What do you folks think? Should I remove it or just leave it as it is? Also, Is this something I can do myself or do I have to send it to a gunsmith? Thanks! GO CHARGERS!!! |

My own personal opinion is,if its for carry leave it stock! If you do not like a mag disconnect on your carry pistol, buy a different carry pistol.
I am sure others will disagree! |

I agree with roadrash. If you ever had to use the browning for SD, a lawyer could make quite a deal of your "rash and poor judgement" in eliminating an OM safety device. I have a HP35 (1977) - I've gotten use the the trigger.

I never bought in to the "Lawyers will skin you" thing. I've never seen proof that It has ever happened.
I would lose the mag safety. I saw a good walk through online somewhere that had very good photos to go with it, I just can't remember where. Rob I am an American Airman: Wingman, Leader, Warrior. How likely is it you will be in a running gun battle with this weapon, need to do a mag change, and have to discharge the weapon before you can insert the new one but after you drop the old one?

Whether you want to take it out is a decision you'll have to make. I find that it improves the trigger and I think that magazine disconnect safeties raise a few safety concerns of their own. If you decide to take it out, it isn't very difficult.
If you do go by the instructions at the link that the others beat me to posting, do not/not remove the trigger pin in the direction he shows in the first photo. Drive it from the rounded side as several posters later in the thread note. A couple of issues to consider: 1) It is very easy to mar the frame removing the main trigger pin (trust me on this one), which can be a pain to get out. Use electrical tape or something similar to cover the rounded side of the pin and surrounding frame. Get the gun firmly braced on a hard surface (wrapped as necessary to avoid scratching on the bottom and with the necessary clearance for the pin to come out). Using an over-sized, flat-faced punch, give it a firm blow with a hammer. This should get it started out -- the toughest part of the job -- so you can use an appropriately sized punch to finish its removal. 2) The magazine safety disconnect is difficult to put back in. I tried once just for the sake of trying and gave up. There may be a trick to it that makes it easy, but... Chris |

If a carry/SD gun-leave it in--If only a range toy-take it out---once its out, you might need a gunsmith to put it back in--dmd

I've known plenty, and I'm still waiting on proof that this has ever lead to a conviction. Rob I am an American Airman: Wingman, Leader, Warrior. I will never leave an Airman behind, I will never falter, and I will not fail. From The Airman's Creed |

In criminal court it probably won't matter much. In civil court ,it paints a picture and can sway the jury . |

I took mine out, makes the trigger smoother. It's not a carry gun but if it were ever used & I had to defend the decision, I'm sure a good lawyer can easily defend the modification as most pistols do not have a mag disconnect.
IF YOU AREN'T HANDLOADING, YOU AREN'T SHOOTING ENOUGH! If you could make your own gas, wouldn't you??? |

I'm not overly worried about the lawyer thing myself. However I do think it is shortsighted to circumvent any safety feature of any weapon.
It was designed to work that way. If you don't like it buy some other pistol. "I am a Soldier. I fight where I'm told and I win where I fight." GEN George S. Patton, Jr. |

Why even give them the opportunity to raise the issue--esp in your CA anti-gun climate! Better to even avoid the issue--Don't be there!! dmd

Get rid of it. The trigger pull will improve and you'll shoot and enjoy it more.

Take it out. The lawyer argument is pure BS assuming you intentionally shot the person. Ayoob and others peddle this crap to make money and sell magazines.
I also don't believe that the HP originally came with a disconnect so in reality you aren't changing anything, just returning it back to the way it was. |

I'm a lawyer, and mine is out. Of course, I no longer carry it since our policy specifies double action capability. I could see it being an issue if it were an accidental shooting, but if it's a deliberate one, I can't see it getting in front of a jury.
