I have been debating these for a few years and have finally taken the bait. With a price like 339.00 it's hard not to. I've been eyeballing the FNP 9mm also but started with the less expensive pistol. Personal experiences would be great. Thanks.

My brother bought one of these in .40. It is the best built polymer gun I have ever seen. It has a similair grip angle to a glock, so if you dont like the glock grip angle you wont like the Steyr either. It is an absolute tank and has never jammed. The slide is not very tall at all, so it takes some getting used to when racking it. The sight system is unusual as well. I would say they are good defensive sights, but poor for precision shooting. The trigger on his is a tad gritty, but I would expect that to get better with more rounds down the pipe. As far as straight up build quality, I dont know of a better pistol. If you can pick one up and handle it, and the ergonomics dont bother you, then I would highly recommend it.

I appreciate the hopeful statement. You would think if they can build an AUG...

The original version was very unreliable. The new version isn't much better.

If someone got one that works, they were lucky.

It's too bad because I like the way they look and feel. And for the price, I would jump on one..........were it not for the fact the one I shot gagged at least once per mag. And I have never heard of or read reviews of one that always worked. Torquem, your brother apparently got a good one. If I knew I would have that luck, I would get one too.

The FNP doesn't have the cool factor the Steyr does but at least it's reliable.

Nonsense, most Steyrs have a good rep for reliability, mine has had zero issues.

Two of my shooting buddies have Steyr M9A1 pistols. One has been a tack driver right out of the box. But the other one had extraction issues till 500 rounds through the pipe, and now on then it is completeley reliable, too. Both pistols are slightly over 1000 rounds. But I must add that we only use 124 gr NATO FMJ.

I had one of the original M40's. I really liked the gun, and its sights. Steyr provided me with the upgraded trigger early on in my ownership (along with a free magazine) which I appreciated. Conceptually, I considered it to be an "improved" Glock G23, and carried it in a Blade-Tech IWB holster.

Unfortunately, I routinely encountered extraction/jamming issues when I used the gun in competition, at least one in every hundred rounds...so the gun became tradeing material. I say unfortunately, because I really liked it and its potential. Hopefully, you'll find your -A1 to be an improvement, but I'd strongly recommend sending a minumum of 500 problem-free rounds downrange first before trusting it for any carry duties.

I have 5 good local friends/shooting buddies that have had zero issues with their M-A1s (spanning all three available calibers) - I guess they are all really lucky? And since I have two, and I cannot recall the last time I had issues, I must be twice as lucky? Roll Eyes

There are a few out there with issues - Steyr has changed the extractor design several times now and there are a few bad mags out there that someone douched up and put the wrong springs in... Should you be one of the unfortunate FEW, you dial up Steyr Arms Inc. and the crew (now in Alabama) there will take care of you, no questions asked, free of charge. Their customer service is top notch and should be an industry model.

My two M9A1s have been rock solid - I carry one almost every day and I really couldn't recommend a better CCW pistol.

At $339, how can you pass? Cool

I am glad they got the guns on the right track.
My experiences and that of others I know have been less positive.

The reliability issue is why I haven't gotten one myself. If that seems to be an old issue, I may have to join the crowd.

Well I just picked up a LNIB M9A1 and love it. In fact I enjoy it as well and my Glock 19. It will take some more sessions for me to get used to the trapizoid sights.

But I ran 100+ rounds through it and there were no issues. Up close (21ft)the sights worked great for me, at 25 yards it shot high for me but a fellow shooter got quite the group at 25 yards with gold sabers.

After I run 500 more rounds through it I will make it my CCW for a while.

These are excellent guns and a great value. once you field strip and compare side by side to, say, a glock, you will see that it is made better.

I had an original .40, no problems ever, and I gave it to a buddy as a wedding present (the originals' grips were a bit too slick for me).

now I have the new 9mm, and it rocks. Great trigger--best I have ever used on a poly gun. I have had no problems with this one either.

The makers of the AUG did get it right, at least for me.

I'll take some pics and give a range report when I pick it up from my dealer. It should be here any day. I've been carrying a 229 9mm more than a decade and it's my favorite by far. I found the 229 at a gun show for less than $350.00. It looked like it had been used as a boat anchor in the Gulf but I saw potential. I cleaned it up, refinished some parts in a park tank, and it's been a tack driver/goto gun ever since. This Steyr has some stiff competition. Thanks for the input guys!

My Steyr 9mm has been 100% reliable and has a much better trigger than any Glock I have owned(G17, G27) and has a better angled grip much like the Luger. I bought mine thru CDNN and have been VERY impressed with it. Check out the Steyr forum for owners opinions and issues.

Just picked up my Steyr M9-A1 and I have to say having never hadnled one that I was surprised how much I like the feel. The trigger has some take up and a slight semblance of a Glock trigger but shorter and smoother. Well presented and manufactured pistol and I can't believe the small price. 339 at CDNN. I saw one for sale on the Steyr forums for 280! SO far so good. Next stop range with pics.

I bought a M9 as a beater pistol when someone was blowing them out for less than $300.

Thousands of rounds later, no malfunctions or issues.

Well, I picked one up in January with the intention of using it for CCW.

It's nice-sized, good weight and has an okay trigger that I am still getting used to, but I like carrying it. It feels great in the IWB Kydex I bought for it, conceals fine, good weight.

It has some issues with certain ammunition types which I found out the hardway. It locked up while shooting some S&B 115gr ammo on my first trip to the range and had to be brought to the gunsmith.

It just doesn't like certain types of ammo and has had FTE/FTF. With other ammo, like WWB 115gr, it shoots fine. I've got some 125-gr Cor-Bon loaded in it now and it shot those fine, but I still want to try more rounds.

The jury is still out for me in terms of ammo types. I'd hate to think I purchased a finicky handgun, but then again if I use it only for the one purpose, self-defense CCW, and use the right ammo, I'm not too worried.

I really, REALLY like the way it feels, carries and handles.

My 226 can be worn, it's just bulky and large, though 100% reliable.

Be sure to check out http://www.steyrclub.com/ for more info.
