Who has been using the short magnums and what do you think of them?
I have been using a 300 WSM the last couple years and have found it to be great, a couple guys at our range are using the 270 WSM and like it, no info or experience with the 7mm WSM and it seems to have died off I have found the 300 WSM easy to load down for deer and load up for long shots and bigger game, quite versatile really, kind of like an enhanced 30-06 Any comments? Observations? Chance favors the prepared mind |

I suppose the wsm are all right ,I think the gun manufactures like to come out with new calibers to make us bight.I jumped out on a couple of pretty new calibers recently and I can tell you the fun is gone when you start buying brass and components and dies.

i switched from a 270 to the 270 wsm when i bought me new rem 700 and it puts holes in things and then those things drop and stop moving just like with my 270 but bigger holes
three main reasons for me doing this 1) extended my hunting range from a comfortable max of 300 yards to about 500 yards 2)i don't like looking for deer 3)when i begin hunting larger game (elk, caribou) or game that requires a longer shot (mule deer, elk) i wont have to buy another rifle wait...i think #3 is a bad thing Shoot low boys! They're riding shetland ponies! |

I had been kicking around the idea of getting into some of those short mags, but I worry about future availability of these cartridges, being that I dont reload. I'm worried that it may go the way of the Remington Ultra Mags, but I may be wrong- wouldn't be the first time.

The 270WSM is a real nice round.
As always, it come down to what your hunting now and what you want to hunt in the future to see what gun(s) to buy. Check out the on-line Federal Ammunition ballistic charts. Real nice way for you to compare different rounds / calibers against each other to see how they perform against each other. However, one advantage the "old" calibers have is bullet availability in the middle of nowhere. Air Canada left me scrambling to find ammo a few years ago in Smithers Canada. Gun stores had lots of choices in my 30-06 (even my federal high energy Nosler partition. My brother was out of luck with his 300WSM. |

I purchased a .270 wsm and I love it. It is a couple or 3 hundred ft/s faster than a .270 win and will extend your range a little bit. Some people believe the short action will make the potential accuracy increase, and it certainly makes a follow up quicker. Where it is going to shine is bridging the gap between a .300 being too much and a .270 being only adequate. It is kinda a small niche but I love rifles, what can I say. I only wish my Weatherby Accumark was chambered for the .270 wsm and my Winchester m70 was chambered for .270 win.

So what your giving away the Kimber, 460 barrel, dies, brass, etc.? I can drop by tomorrow and take all of it off your hands. _________________________________________________________ So a friend sees me sticking my car keys in a pile of dog doo and asks, "Whatcha doing?" If you had a 30-06, 280 or a 270 already, then buying a WSM is a moot point. If you just wanted soemthing diff. why not. I would certainly become a handloader though. You can make brass for any of them.
IF YOU AREN'T HANDLOADING, YOU AREN'T SHOOTING ENOUGH! If you could make your own gas, wouldn't you??? |
