i just purchased a new sig 220 and i'm wondering how safe it is to use reload ammo that they sell at my local gun range. my good friend had a reload round explode in his baby eagle and ruin the gun, so i'm hesitant to use them. so i'm wondering what thoughts you all have about it.

It depends on the ammunition. There are some well known companies that reload ammunition and have a good reputation, but even commercial reloaders are subject to problems.
My department uses reloaded ammunition by Precision Delta and except for one squib load, we've had no problems in thousands of rounds. On the other hand, when I first started, the department was using another supplier and that stuff was absolutely horrible. I've heard of more problems with reloads by small, local outfits. All in all, if you're hesitant, don't use the stuff, or at least not until you've been able to research the issue and determine what kind of a reputation they have. Finally, most gun manufacturers specifically state that use of reloaded ammunition is not sanctioned. Welcome to the forum, BTW. “Most men … can seldom accept the simplest and most obvious truth if it … would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.” — Leo Tolstoy |

Yes, welcome to the forum. You'll get lots of excellent info here. As usual, when Sigfreund "speaks", logic and reason prevail. As he said, it depends.... I would not use reloads from "a friend of a friend" who's making them in his basement. On the other hand, commercial reloading operations can turn out some very nice ammo. Georgia-arms.com comes to mind and sells to the public. Atlanta Arms ammo is seen in gunshops and ranges all around here. Both have a good reputation. Unless you're doing it yourself, however, I've found that the price difference is not so significant when compared to the cheap, "practice" ammo available in bulk. JMO, I don;t shoot range reloaded ammo. It varies from pretty good to absolute crap. Either buy from a reputable source, like GeorgiaArms or make your own.
IF YOU AREN'T HANDLOADING, YOU AREN'T SHOOTING ENOUGH! If you could make your own gas, wouldn't you??? |

Rip,why not load your own? I do not trust even the factory,if I screw up then is me. I have to shoot factory on occasion to get match brass but I am always on edge.My shooting friend shoots factory and there are times when we know that there was a hot one,but with a good quality firearm its just that ,a hot one not a Kaboom

whats the cost of doing it yourself? i've heard that its supposedly cheaper, but what kind of equipment and stuff do you have to buy? loading my own is something i could see myself eventually getting into, but i don't really know anything about it at all.

Ripp, 45CAL and I both reload for our 45s.
And I reload for my AR. There's LOTS of info in the Reloading section! And we'll be happy to assist in your questions. So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause. |

It comes down to trust. Buy ammo like you buy gunsmithing services. Get it from the outfit that has the most to lose from a bad reputation. You wouldn't just hand over your gun to anyone would you? But that's kinda what you're doing when you put their ammo in your gun. I trust the big ammo companies for new ammo. But the only reloads that I put in my guns are my own. That's because I have first hand knowledge of all the things that could go wrong. It's not surprising that the reloaders on this forum advise you to not to buy reloads.

Is it safe to shoot reloads in your 220? Yes
Would I use reloads sold by a local gunshop? No. I know the sort of quality control I use for my reloads. I would have no idea of the QC from anyone else. Some of the best advice ever given about reloads has to be "If you didn't reload it yourself don't shoot it". |
