I've been using Ranger T's in most of my pistols for a while now for personal protection. I've been using Speer Gold Dots in my 45's. I just purchased a used Springfield 1911 and am having some feeding issues with the Gold Dots.

What type of hollow points are you guys using in your 1911's?

Thanks.

My 1911s wil feed anything but if you are happt w/ Ranger T, stay there. If you want something a bit more reliable than the GD, try the Rem.GS. It's one of the slickest feeding JHP I have tried.

IF YOU AREN'T HANDLOADING, YOU AREN'T SHOOTING ENOUGH! If you could make your own gas, wouldn't you???

Federal HST 230 grain work well out of my Nighthawk Custom. I used Gold Dots for awhile too and had not problems with them either.

I'm not fluent in the language of violence, but I know enough to get around in places where it's spoken.

+1 to these choices. Fed HST look like they might not feed with it's huge hollowpoint and almost cylinder shape, but it has been flawless in my Colt Combat Commander and Sig 220 Carry. I am now function Gold Dots 230 will equal success.

I agree GS feed great in most 1911's . that said I usa ranger 230gr. but GS's are a devistating round also.

230 gr Gold Dots in Wilson Combat magazines.

Zero failures in hundreds and hundreds (possibly thousands) of rounds of Gold Dot and many thousands of rounds of ball in three different 1911's, including a Springfield.

Also if the 1911 is very old, it may have a steeper, narrower feed ramp. MOST modern 1911's were designed with wider, lower feed ramps to feed hollow-point rounds better.

Do yourself a favor and try some Wilson magazines, even if you don't use the Gold Dot....but I have a feeling the Gold Dot will work fine with them. Try the new Wilson Combat ETM magazine.

It fits 8 rounds with a little room left so you don't over-pressure the spring if you like to do the "+1" thing. It is ever so slightly longer than a normal 1911 magazine.

Wilson mag will not work on some Colt 1911 for some reason. Get FTF

Update - Okay...i've got some more data and I renamed the topic. First off - I purchased a used Springfield 1911 Loaded...came with 4 mags:
2 Chip McCormack 8 round mags
1 Kimber 7 round mag
1 unmarked 7 round mag of unknown origins.

So, basically...all 4 mags will feed ball ammo no problem all day long as it seems.
However, None of the mags would feed my Speer Gold Dot HP's...they won't even come all the way out of the mag...they don't even really make it all the way to the feed ramp. Even putting fewer rounds in the mags than the max doesn't help with the GDHP's.

I have found that none of the mags stay snug all the way up into the frame. If I hold them all the way up with my other hand, they will feed when the mags are not at max capacity....but nothing will make this pistol feed the GDHP with the mags full.

Any suggestions? Any and all input will be welcome.

Thanks

If its used id replace the recoil spring and make sure it is the stock rate. I tried to replace the #16 with the #18 and ran into all kinds of issues with with feeding, especially on the first and last round. When i went back to the #16 everything worked fine again. Forgot to mention its a springer 1911 as well

If all else fails, just give Springfield a call. I just got a loaded parkerized used and when I got it, the plunger tube fell off. I called them and they sent me a shipping label right away. They have great customer service and their lifetime warranty is transferable to whoever owns the gun.
