Higher quality ammo produces better targets, tighter groups and is in general more accurate regardless of the caliber. This is due mostly to uniformity of the ammo and the quality of the components. Federal loads a match grade ammo in 9mm for target shooting, but its expensive.

For the most part match ammo is useful to the shooter when shooting certain target games, notably Bullseye shooting where precision and accuracy predominate the game. For other games like shooting reactive steel targets accuracy isn't as important as the targets score the same if hit in the middle or 4" from the middle as long as they fall over and time is the major factor in winning.
