look on gunbroker or check with www.ammunition togo.com Federal HST/ Winchester Ranger-Ts or Speer Gold Dots will all serve your purposes nicely.

An armed mature citizen is a help not a hindrance. If you have a CHP please do so, just practice common sense and always carry a cell phone.

bobby lee (August 30, 2008 04:42 PM) opines:

The whole point of carrying a gun is to be able to shoot somebody dead'rn-a-doornail, period.

I take your point (and agree), though I demur on one particular: the point of carrying a gun is to stop particular criminal behavior which justifies use of deadly force. Such stoppage has a high correlation with the death of the stoppee, but that is an unfortunate (if sometimes necessary) consequence of the main goal.

A fine point, perhaps, but if you don't think that would play much better at trial (if it went that far), please feel free to say why.

When I first took up carrying some years ago, I made a point to study the self-defense law of my state of residence so that when asked "Why did you shoot that person?" I could answer (in the presence of my attorney), "Because they [describe elements of illegal behavior that justify deadly force] at the time, and it was necessary to stop them." If my attorney approved, I'd add that I never wanted to actually kill anybody (which is true enough), but was forced to defend my own (or some other's) life or limb. I'm still working on Virginia self-defense law, though I suspect getting the basics down elsewhere will help.

Thank you, bobby lee and pcolvario for your expert opinions. It's good to know that I didn't misread the principles behind all those cases.

regards,

GR

Thanks also to yankee-carpet-bagger (August 30, 2008 09:32 PM), for a very substantive answer! Welcome to the Old Dominion!

I am not a gun. But I choose to own and use them.

Not sure what on that page indicates those are target only loadings. And by all accounts 9BPLE seems to work pretty well. Just because it's an older design doesn't mean it's lost it potency. Besides, shot placement is still key and at ~$150/500 rounds one can practice with it quite a bit. Just my thoughts.

As for the 9BPLE it is clean firing, low flash accurate stuff. However the HP clogs easily and then ballistically it acts like a plain ol' FMJ. Story goes that a sales rep was asked frankly what do you think of the 9BPLE? He replied, nothing, great round if it's 1981. Case in point, BG steals, runs from the PO-PO, gets in a SUV and flees. Tries to run cops over, they shoot like 15 rounds at him, hitting him 8 times through the door and the back of the seat. Several good center mass shots. BG still manages to flee, driving in a high speed pursuit for an hour and then wrecks. Rounds recovered from intestines, scrotum, kidneys. BG is still alive, stated "you boys can sure shoot but I'm still here." True story, facts are not exact, but you get the idea.
