I need some opinions...I snagged a case of Federal "XM" 193 5.56. Somebody on GunBroker said that Federal, Winchester, etc., put factory seconds ammo onto the marketplace. I opened several boxes and they are nato cross Lake City cases, but some have noticeable sizing marks, minute dings, etc. They are tan Federal boxes. Anybody aware of this going on for a fact? Thanks.

It is true.

Did you buy XM-193 or XM-193C?

The xm193C will be the seconds. I've bought some of it, it all went bang quite nicely.

Even the XM193 i bought from them isn't cleaned up. They don't polish the brass so it doesn't look the finest, but it shoots really well.

It is definitely XM193, not "C". The Privi stuff I've gotten recently definitely looks much better, but I've shot some Chilean 7.62 that looked like it sat underwater for about five years and it all went bang. I just wondered whether it was urban legend or true. Anybody know the specifics on the differences between the XM and C stuff?

Military issue 5.56 generally is not cosmetically pleasing. What you described sounds par for the course.

I don't keep up to minute on the latest ammo happenings, but it is my understanding that XM-193PD are the "seconds". Am pretty sure that those are all bulk packed.

They don't waste time polishing the brass and making it look pretty if it's just going to shot up so quickly. It's made to function, not display.

You will be fine with it, it's good ammo.

I have shot 2-3k of the stuff this year and I just bought another 10k last week. It goes bang each and every time and my high mileage Colt seems to really like it. I shot a 3" 10 round group at 200 during a carbine instructor course this spring.

A local store had it. At a really good price too. Contact me offline if you need more details.

1. M193 - First

2. XM193 - Second (usually fine, might have some dings and sealant issues)

3.XM193PD - Third (major defects, inspect all rounds, most will be good enough to shoot, I've had about 20-30 rds per 1,000 that I would not shoot due to split case necks or bent cases. It's usually loose bulk packed, marked "for training use only" on the out side of hte origional box.

Haven't played with the C ammo.
