I am looking at buying some bulk ammo for SHTF situations, what is your opinion of the Silver Bear .223, has anyone encountered issues with this ammo gumming up your gun or failures to fire?

I used 308 in my Ar10 with no problems. Only tried 20 rounds, though.

I have heard AR's dont like it. I have used some SB in my gas piston guns with no issues. My FN-CAL ate it just fine on full auto...

I've had good luck with Silver Bear in my SIG 556 and RRA. No malfunctions so far and I am at about the 3K mark as far as total rounds of SB fired. I use the 62 grain HP/SP load as my SIG does not like shorter bullets....that damn 1/7 twist. Not match grade accurate by any stretch, but minute of steel plate it is. YMMV

If memory serves, Silver Bear is the faux nickel-plated stuff, right?
If so, here is my experience with their .308 load, which I'm fairly certain will also apply to their .223 load- The finish is susceptible to a very fine and abrasive corrosion. It has been my experience that this is detrimental to extraction. Also, it was loaded pretty light. Low relative velocity, coupled with a (suspected, not proven by yours truly) thick bullet jacket, will fail to produce satisfactory results against two-legged varmints. At least as compared to something like Federal XM193. Just what I read on the internets.... |
