I'm out of town on business and a local store has a good deal on CCI Blazer. I want to pick some up and check it in with my luggage.
I just checked with JetBlue's website and they limit 10lb of ammo. One of the boxes weighs 18 ounces. So I think I can get 8 boxes and be fine. Has anyone flown with ammo before? Would the boxes the ammo comes in be considered sufficient packaging? Or do they really want it in another cardboard box or something? ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. No experience, but here's the TSA site that talks more about guns than ammo:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm "You must securely pack any ammunition in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging that is specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition." |

Yup, I looked at that earlier.
Basically I want to know if retail box packaging would be sufficient. A JetBlue rep said it was (I called them to ask). But anything can happen between today and my flight. One of the ideas I came up with is to buy 10 boxes and leave 8 here for next week. Just try 2 to see what happens. If I run into issues I can always ship it and kill any and all the savings ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. I pick up ammo on a fairly regular basis when I’m out of town and run across a great deal. I would go to the airlines web site, print off their regulations and highlight the portion pertaining to ammunition. The limit is 10 or 11 pounds and most airlines actually prefer the ammo be in the manufacturer’s original box. Check in at the ticket counter (don’t use the curbside baggage check), tell them that you have 10 pounds of ammo in your baggage and show them their regulations. I’ve never found an agent who knows their own regulations. After reading their regs, most folks are okay with it. Some folks will call their supervisor; who after reading their regs, has been okay with it. I’ve never been denied.

Thanks! Just what I was looking for. Do they weigh the boxes? Or just take your word for it?
I think I'd be maybe a pound over if I get 10 boxes vs 8 boxes which is definitely less than 10 lb. ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. Free Classic P-Series Sig Armorer services on Long Island and around the NYC area. |

I've flown w/ ammo several times. The limit is 5 Kilos or about 11#. If you tape the boxes togethe, you should have no problems. They just don't want loose ammo rolling around. FWIW, If the ammo is that good a deal, buy a bunch & have it UPS to your home.

Thanks, I picked up some at Academy tonight. 82$ for 500 rounds. Almost clearance prices!
How does the process usually go? You go to check your bag in and tell them you have ammunition to declare. Then what *usually happens*? ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. Free Classic P-Series Sig Armorer services on Long Island and around the NYC area. |

Yep, that's it. They will usually ask how much & want to see if it's packaged properly. They may weigh it to make sure you are not over. Be nice, smile, tell them 10# & good luck.

The deal would have to be pretty smokin for me to deal with lugging 10lbs of ammo through an airport.

Just keep the rest in your pockets and carry on.

The check-in process was very uneventful.
I told the check-in agent that I had ammunition to declare. She brought up the regulations on her computer, asked me if I had a firearm to declare and if I knew how much it weighed. She walked me over to the TSA baggage screener who asked me if it was in manufacturer boxes. After I told him it was and asked him if he wanted to see it, he told me he did not and wished me a good flight. Very smooth. ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. Sometimes you get the odd TSA duck or antigun counter person. My buddy checked in same time as me, diff. counter person. I sailed thru, they had him pulling stuff out of hi sbag so they could weigh the ammo. Smile, freindly attitude, it helps w/ some of these people.

Heh, you must have jinxed me. I flew back with more ammo I got last week and this time there was a different TSA person doing the check-ins. I think he was less familiar with the regulations because he proceeded to put on gloves, take out all 8 boxes of ammo and look into each one of them until he was satisfied I wasn't smuggling anything in there.
Then it was (almost) smooth sailing. But that's more of a flying rant than an ammo thing. ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact I do own a gun. Free Classic P-Series Sig Armorer services on Long Island and around the NYC area. |
