I doubt anyone here has standard industry test bbl’s for comparison so until that information is possible any revolver vs. semi-auto comparison that uses a revolver bbl with a greater rifled bbl length ~0.25-5” over that of the semi-auto rifled bbl length will be extremely flawed -- in this case by ~1.24".

The simple velocity numbers gathered by various known bbl lengths and posted in this thread supports the accounting of this issue. Regardless of what you believe until those key issues have been addressed appropriately in the analysis it doesn’t matter what you believe because the data overwhelmingly supports that my analysis is correct.

Where is the "over whleming data"? A semiauto pistol bbl. does act like an enclosed test chamber to a point. You do get a vel. gain vs shooting a sim. load in a rev. bbl. You do lose vel. in a rev. via the cyl. gap. There is really no way for you or I to prove or disprove the semantics of what constitutes a bbl length. There can be as much vel. deviation from one bbl. to another. I have (3) 4"bbl. 357mags & they all get diff. vel. w/ the same load. Sow we can agree to disagree about bbl. length but it is pretty clear that w/ 125grJHP, the 357sig is as close to a 357mag in sim. size platforms.

IF YOU AREN'T HANDLOADING, YOU AREN'T SHOOTING ENOUGH! If you could make your own gas, wouldn't you???

This should settle it. Steve did Chrono the 357mag and 357sig. 357sig wins hands down, even with the chamber being counted as the barrel length in the Glock 32.

Data sources:
357mag
357sig

Now I'll use 125gr and 4" barrels for both calibers:

357vs357.xls

357sig is the clear winner, and remember that's counting the chamber as part of the barrel length in the Glock. The Glock 32 barrel is really 2.86 inches; the Colt Trooper is a true 4.00 inches.

1347fps vs 1271fps - 357sig ownes 357mag.

I know that must be tongue in cheek. WHile I agree that they are pretty much equal. You realize that you can have as much as 100fps diff. between bbls. on the same manuf. pistols. I had a 2 3/4" SS that was faster over my 4" M19 w/ every load. My current 2 1/4" SP101 is within 25fps of tht same M19.

I really like this round. I had a Sig P229 that I won NIB at an auction. I fired 2 boxes of UMC and found that it was very accurate and controllable. The bottle-neck design is a positive in my book when it comes to feeding. The only "downsides" to the round are that the ammo is harder to find than 9mm, 40, or 45 and that it operates at 40,000 PSI (which has been noted to accelerate wear in some guns).

If I were a police officer, I would carry a 357 Sig as my duty arm.

I'm waiting to get my 229 SAS Gen. II .357sig back from Sig as we speak. They have only had it one day. I'm getting an AEP and short trigger. When it gets back I'll put some Hogue Wrap around grips on it. Then...off to the range for some serious shooting. Not worried about wear...I'm sure it will last me forever.
