JHP for 9mm and .40?

I for the 1st time reloaded 50ea 147 gr 9mm and tested them in mag of 3x147/3x124 and 3x115gr.

Used a Beretta M9 and a RIA Commander.

the 147's were NICE to shoot as I am trying to combat recoil during USPSA comps.

You can feel the ladder of recoil from the 3.

Not easy to find store bought but you need to try some for a interesting range day.

For 9x19, 124 grain, whether factory or handloading.

For .40 S&W, 180 grain for factory, 165 for handloading.

As requested, an opinion.

Best in what terms? Self defense, plinking, competition?
For competition I like heavy for caliber, 147gr in 9mm & 175-180gr in 40. For self defense, I like 124gr +p & 147gr +P in 9mm & 165gr or 180gr in 40.

For self defense, I like medium-to-heavy bullet weights. In 9mm, that'd be 124-147gr. In .40S&W, that'd be 165-180gr.

My current choice for 9mm is the 147gr HST. When I had a Glock 23 I used 165gr Gold Dot.

For range use, whatever you shoot best in your gun(s).

My concern is self defense, My c/c is P7psp and learned the 147 does not function well in that weapon, switched to Cor bon power Ball for my psp. They are 100 grain, which come out 1475 fps, with 483 fps. Plus legal in N.J. lol Our Dept uses 180 hydo schock with our 229 dak .40. I use the 147 hydro shock in my 229 dak 9mm. I assume the smaller Grain bullet, the faster and more ft lbs .

I like light weight fast 9mm. 115gr 9bple federal or 115gr CorBon. They are +p+ loads.
180gr fed HST is my go to for .40.

the short answer is Gold Dots or HSTs

there are other good ones but you can't really go wrong with either of those --- you rapidly approach the point of splitting hairs

make sure whatever you go with functions well so you're not like that cop 'tap-rack-bang'-ing on every shot...

i have a decent supply of 147gr HSTs for the HD gun

I like .124 in 9mm and .180 in .40 for self defense. BUT, shoot some at the range because my .40 cal shoots pretty high at 15 yards with .165 grain instead of .180 (BHP) 6-8" POI over POA.

124gr for 9mm both for range and for factory Gold Dots

In 40, reloads of 165/180 but for SD ammo I like the hot 135gr factory loads.

European 9x19mm pistols are usually designed around a 115gr bullet... other bullets work ok, but, at least in they European guns I have the 115 gr has given me consistently better results... this has held true for everything from my early Luger to my new FN 509.

In my PSP I use 115gr plated Xtreme copper plated bullets with very good results...

For defensive loads I like the Remington Golden Saber (and I understand the 'black belt' version is even better... It is an improvement in 45acp which I have used a bit) or the Speer Gold Dot.

For 40SAW I like a 165gr bullet... I had to bad a time with the 180gr when the 40SAW first came out... I went to 165gr and the problem went away.

I've always heard/read that 124 is the preferred choice in 9mm, so that's what I use for CCW. For range time, either 124 or 115. But lately I've been hearing a lot of good about the 147gr HPs so I might give them a try soon. For HD I use a 1911 .45 with 230gr HST. I don't own a .40 (I've shot a few but didn't care for any of them).

I've used 124 +P and 147 gr in SIG, S&W and Berretta without ammo related issues.

I'd pick the weight based on accuracy and reliability in the pistol you select.

Winchester Range/SXT, Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot are my preferred brands.
