I picked up some Hornady 230 grain +P XTP ammo. Haven't fired any yet, but I expect good accuracy and feeding from everything I have read. Looks to expand reliably as well, anybody have more info on/experience with this round? I would like to make this my carry round after I run it in.

Pretty much any 230 from Speer, Ranger, or HSTs. I don't care for the plus P stuff.

Yet another slow and heavy here. 230 gr. and non-+p. Even use the same ammo selection as the majority: Ranger T, Gold Dot, and HST.

A few here have told me that five layers of winter clothing does not make that much differance .

but I still wonder, has your Dept done any experiments ?

Back in AZ I kept the same stuff all year round.

Is the dislike for the +P due to its expansion characteristics compared to the non +P, or some other reason? Thanks.

Ranger T has six serrations and talons. The sxt garbage has eight serrations and winchester conviently left the talons out of the sxt civilian ammo.

You should use a bonded round such as Golddot 230 or Remington GS Bonded 230 since you might have to shoot through auto glass someday.

I would use a +P if the barrel is under 5". In .45, there is not a big difference in recoil/flash between the standard and +P so you want the extra velocity for more reliable expansion in the shorter barrel pistols. Most manufacturers test ammunition with a 5" barrel.

Gents,

I've had no issues with the Winch Ranger LE SXT 230 grain standard pressure load.

However, both my Colt Commander and Government Models wound up in the shop for problems after shooting less than 75 rounds of the +P version of the same load. In both cases "hammer follow" was the issue.

Once repaired I went back to the standard pressure load and no problems...

The +P version chrono'd darn near 1,000 FPS from my Commander! That's extremely impressive from a 4 1/4" barrel...

For years I carried Federl Hydra-Shock 230 grainers with zero complaints.

Stick with the standard pressure loads. They perform excellently, are easier to control, and are much easier on your handgun...

For my .45ACPs I use and recommend Federal HST, Hornady TAP CQ, and Gold Dot in that order. I use 230gr +P for each.
