I have a trip planned for Oct. for wild boar. This required a new rifle of course Wink I'm a new owner of my first 308 in the form of a Remington 700 SPS tactical 20 inch. What load would you guys recommend for a hog up to around 100 lbs with a nice 3x9 mounted? Not planning on making any "record for distance" shots..... Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've never taken a hog, but any standard hunting load out of a .308 should do the trick when you do your part and you're not shooting at extended ranges. Pick one that shoots well out of your rifle. Post pictures of your pig and rig when you're successful.

I haven't hunted hogs but have heard of people around here using the same thing they use deer hunting,

Given a 308 I would think a good 150 or 165 grain load would be fine

I have heard good things about the Barnes TSX (solid copper) rounds for beefy game. I believe Black Hills loads them as a factory load.

Edit: Black Hills does load that round.

A .308 will pound them just fine. No need for any high dollar ammo just pick up some Remington CorLoks. Nice and cheap and you will have plenty of cash leftover for Bar-B-Que Sauce. Smile

ANY .308 will work.

I've taken them with .44mag and 7.62x39 which are not as powerful as a .308, so use what shoots best for you and have confidence.

If you hit him in the lungs/heart right behind the shoulder blade any FMJ surplus round will do. I shot a 150 lb. boar with my FAL and British Radway Green and killed him with 1 round. The .308 is a "hammer" on pigs Smile

I agree, the .308 will do just fine..165 gr. core-lok......I've shot several with my .50 cal muzzleloader up to 250 lbs.

Avoid Ballistic Tip or polymer tipped bullets, or light weight ones.

A 165 Partition should work great on about any piggie you see to 300 lb.

.308 is way more than you need. It will certainly do the job. We use Bows around here as hogs are pretty easy to get close too.

This is a little one taken in central florida, she was tasty.

What's that black tube with the yellow sticker on your bow?

I grew up in FL hunting hogs almost every night, and IMO, .308 with any standard cup & core hunting bullet will do just fine.

That is a stabilizer/vibration dampener. It adds weight in front of the bow to help keep it plumb during the shot and absorbs vibration (sound).
